In the lead-up to the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections set for August 2023, Zimbabwe's parliament has passed legislation restricting criticism of the administration.

The "Patriotic Bill," also known as the Criminal Law Code Amendment Bill, contains a provision that makes it illegal to take any action that is thought to willfully damage Zimbabwe's national interests and sovereignty.

According to reports, breaking this law could result in a 20-year prison sentence. Because President Emmerson Mnangagwa is running for re-election and this law has been passed, there are worries that the government may crack down on opposition voices before the national election on August 23.
