Satellite images and footage released by an Egyptian human rights organisation appeared to show the construction of a walled enclosure on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border.

The footage, released by the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, shows workers using heavy machinery erecting concrete barriers and security towers near the border with Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have taken refuge amid Israeli attacks and evacuation orders.

The construction drive comes as Israel has vowed to expand its offensive into Gaza, leading to widespread concern about the humanitarian situation of refugees who have fled there. French president Emmanuel Macron, Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo and UN secretary general António Guterres have called for an immediate ceasefire to ward off a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
