The Comoro Islands, lying between Madagascar and
the East African coast, form one of the world's poorest
and least-known countries. In May 1978, its government
was overthrown in a coup led by white mercenaries.
About 20, with their leader Colonel Robert Denard, still
live on the islands. This report examines the economic and
political background to recent events and describes life in
the Comoros today.
