South Africa's unemployment rate has hit a record high from 34.4%, according to the quarterly labour force survey in the second quarter of 2021, to 34.9 in the third quarter. Economist Duma Gqubule wrote that the unemployment crisis in South Africa is the most heart-breaking betrayal of the promises and dreams of liberation. Gqubule says after years of failed economic policies, the time has come to change course and learn the lessons of economic development that have enabled some countries to transform their economies in one generation. He points out that there is a solution to the problem if the government is prepared to mobilise its resources. Duma Gqubule, Director of the Centre for Economic Development and Transformation joins us.
