In South Africa, there is a growing concern over a surge in killings in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. These killings have been attributed to changes in coalition agreements in Nongoma, leading to a spate of political violence.

Police Minister Bheki Cele reported that over 300 individuals have been arrested in connection with political killings in the province. Since the beginning of September, at least 19 councilors have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has welcomed the Pietermaritzburg High Court's decision to sentence Ayanda Siyanda Mshengu to 25 years in prison for two murders and attempted murder of its councilors. The party hopes that this sentence will act as a deterrent to potential perpetrators of such violence.
