President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa is part of a group of nations that have taken steps towards laying a formal complaint with the International Criminal Court against the Israeli government.
In a groundbreaking announcement made by President Ramaphosa during his state visit to Qatar, South Africa has taken a decisive step against Israel's actions in Gaza. This move comes as part of the commemoration of 30 years of diplomatic ties between South Africa and Qatar.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza, triggered by the attacks on October 7, has resulted in a significant loss of life. While Israeli officials report 1,400 casualties and over 240 kidnappings by Hamas militants, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza claims a much higher toll, stating that 11,320 people, primarily civilians and thousands of children, have been killed due to Israel's aerial bombardment and ground offensive.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine, the South African government condemns the killing of civilians on both sides. Pro-Palestine groups in South Africa have rallied outside the Israeli embassy in Pretoria, demanding the removal of the Israeli Ambassador, Eliav Belotserkovsky.

President Ramaphosa strongly criticized the ongoing operations, particularly the targeting of hospitals where innocent lives are being lost. South Africa, along with other nations, has taken the unprecedented step of referring the actions of the Israeli government to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation. Ramaphosa emphasized that while condemning the actions taken by Hamas, South Africa believes that Israeli actions also warrant scrutiny by the ICC.

Advocating for a two-state solution, Ramaphosa characterized the situation in Gaza as a "concentration camp" where genocide is occurring. He commended Qatar for its mediation efforts between Israel and Palestine, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to the crisis.

"We are opposed to the ongoing operation targeting hospitals, where babies, women, and the injured are dying, and the value of human life is ignored. South Africa stands firm in its commitment to addressing the Israel-Palestine crisis through diplomatic channels and the pursuit of justice at the International Criminal Court," said President Ramaphosa.
