The Impact - GBV and the Law in Africa (Olamide Onifade) | News Central TV
Gender-based violence includes acts of violence in the forms of physical, psychological, or sexual violence against a person specifically because of his or her gender.
It constitutes one of the most widespread human rights abuses and public health problems in the world today with devastating long term consequences for victims’ physical and mental health.
Legislation on gender-based violence across sub-Saharan Africa is often tailored towards rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence. It does not address the many other forms that such violence may take, including female genital mutilation, trafficking in women, and forced prostitution.
Despite the challenges faced by sub-Saharan African States in enacting and implementing legislative reforms, there is now a widespread recognition that gender-based violence must be addressed through specific and appropriate laws.
To shed more light on the need for these legislations, form and impact, Olisa chats with Nigerian lawyer, Olamide Onifade.
