TOGO ATSIA (10th World Music and Dance Concert, Ohio University, 2022)

Atso (Atsia) Agbadza popular known as Togo Atsia is one of the unique representations of women’s commentary on social issues through dance among the Ewes of West Africa. The dance is a stylistic presentation and form of a ”show of” by women during the Ewe Agbadza dance ceremony. Agbadza is among the oldest musical types performed by the Southern Ewe of Ghana, Togo, Benin, and parts of Southwestern Nigeria. As a social and recreational music and dance, its performance is open to everybody in the community, irrespective of class, age, sex, and religion. Dancers often use two horsetails to accentuate their movements.
