10 things you didn't know about Eritrea. Eritrea is a sovereign nation that is located in the horn of Africa. The country’s northern and eastern sides are all surrounded by the Red Sea. The south eastern side is bordered by Djibouti, the west side is bordered by Sudan and Ethiopia to the south. The country is usually sunny, hot, and very beautiful. According to reports, the country is the 99th largest in the world and spans across 45,406sq mile.

Eritrea is a multi-ethnic nation with diverse cultures and about 9 ethnic groups. The country is also a member of African union, and an Arab league observer.
In no particular order here are interesting and amazing facts about this country you probably didn't know.
10. Eritrea has no official language. One amazing fact about this country is that she they have no official language. Eritrea is a multilingual nation and all the languages spoken in the country are equal. The de facto language in the country is Tigrinya and it is majorly spoken in the southern and central parts. The language is spoken by more than two million citizens as at 2006. Other Eritrea languages are Saho, Bilen, Nara, Tig, Saho, Kunama, Beja, and Arabic. Although their previous colonial language was Italian, it is not recognized by the government. The two official working languages are English and Tigrinya.
9. Over 30% of the Eritrean freedom fighters were women. The female citizens of Eritrea played a significant role in the fight for independence. Their women had warriors who fought side by side with men in the 1810 AD. They helped in fighting against the Ethiopians and Italians. Women made up 30% of the freedom fighters which made Eritrea the country with the highest female fighters in any other liberation movements in the world. One of the reasons why women fought in the war was because the population of Eritrea was small. This is one amazing fact about the country called Eritrea.
8. No election since independence
The people of Eritrea do not know what it feels like living in a country that holds national or presidential election. Ever since they gained independence in 1993, the country has been a one-party state. Since their independence till now, they have only had one president. There has never been any presidential election since 1993 and regional elections since 2004. Their president who is named Afwerki Isaias has express hoe he felt about the western style democracy. He once revealed in an interview that Eritrea will have to wait for four decades to carry out an election. They have a total of 75 elected national assembly members since 1993 and the others were appointed.
