A study by the South African Development Community Secretariat estimated that transport inefficiencies cost African economies R3.3 trillion ($170 billion) annually. This is caused by a series of factors, including the lack of harmonisation of standards and regulations in the sector, which is hindered when it comes to efficient transport flows.
There are concerns that South Africa does not have an integrated, safe public transport system. Chairman of Southern African Transport Conference Dr Mathetha Mokonyama joins for more.
