Mike Johnson, a conservative lawmaker from Louisiana, has been elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States, ending weeks of chaos and Republican infighting on Capitol Hill. He secured 220 votes in the lower chamber of Congress. Johnson is the fourth Republican nominee for this position since the removal of Kevin McCarthy on October 3.
However, the previous nominee, Tom Emmer of Minnesota, withdrew from the race abruptly after about four hours. In his address to the House following the vote, the 51-year-old Johnson pledged to introduce a bill in support of Israel, an area of bipartisan agreement.
