Although South Africa continues to feature in the top ten performing countries on the continent, it also now stands tenth amongst those nations who have experienced its greatest decline in good governance over the past year according to the 2016 Ibrahim Index of African Governance.

The state of the South African nation this past year has left much to be desired in terms of politics, governance, abuse of state institutions and funds, and their collective effects on the country’s economy and image. However embarrassed or shocked one may be to see how the mighty have somewhat fallen, is South Africa any different to the rest of the continent in the way it governs itself.

Having over the past 20 years heralded itself as the gateway to Africa and its beaconing star, the story the country has told over the past year leaves much to be desired by many.
