25 million birds are illegally killed in the Mediterranean each year. The majority are songbirds, such as chiffchaffs and nightingales. These migratory species spend spring and summer in European breeding grounds, then travel south for winter. One of the most popular “flyways” takes them over the Black Sea and Mediterranean – a route that's also incredibly dangerous. With millions of songbirds trapped by hunters in countries like Cyprus and Italy, their numbers are rapidly declining. Some end up in cages, but many are killed and eaten.
