The electoral commission has instructed prospective candidates for Zimbabwe's August elections to pay their registration fees in cash. This comes after Zimbabwean lawmakers defended a contentious vote to raise registration fees. Presidential candidates must now pay $20,000, while parliamentary candidates must pay $1,000.

The registration deadline was extended by one day on Wednesday due to payment system issues, which meant that some candidates' money could not be completed.

The commission says that 11 candidates have been excluded from the election scheduled for August due to a 20-fold increase in registration fees.
