Joyce Jenje Makwenda was born on the 24th March 1958 in Harare (Salisbury) - An award winning Journalist/Producer and Artist. She is also an Independent Scholar, Archivist, Historian, Researcher, Author, Lecturer and Ethnomusicologist. She has more than 30 years of working experience covering areas of early urban culture, music, politics, education, religion, media, fashion, sexual (taboos) and cultural issues and women’s histories in Zimbabwe.
She produced and directed several other documentaries on music and she is also a renowned writer who has written a number of books and novels that includes, Zimbabwe Township Music (2005), and Women Musicians of Zimbabwe 1930's to 2013 -A Struggle for Voice and Artistic Expression (2013).
Joyce Jenje Makwenda owns one of the biggest private social history collection/archive in Zimbabwe at her house, which consists of interviews on music, on audio, video, and most of it transcribed and also press cuttings, photos, LP’s and music artifacts, such as gramophones etc.
I also own a vast music catalogue of music dating from the 1930s on Zimbabwean and international artists. The music is also found in different formats such as cassette, cd, vinyl and video. The Collection/Archive also have artefacts which include - music instruments going as far back as the 1940’s, gramophone, 1970s stereo, typewriters which date back as far as the 50’s.
