Burkina Faso is one of the most respected cinema nations in Africa, mainly heralded for their films in the 80s, 90s and early 00s. In this episode, we go through the key films of the nation, explore the works of Idrissa Ouedraogo and Gaston Kaboré, and list our favourites.

We will also ask why everything suddenly went so quiet, look at the current state of Burkinabe cinema, and explore how European/Western funding and distribution may colour how we see the cinematic contributions from the country.

Filmmaker and designer Walé Oyéjidé — whose fashion designs appear in Marvel's BLACK PANTHER films — crafts this imaginative debut feature about a Burkinabè boy who migrates to Italy and later discovers a way to go back in time and regain what he lost. A multidimensional exploration of love and migration, this poetic story bends time to explore the meaning of existing in two states — both coming and going, running away and running toward. From the community in Burkina Faso to the two central protagonists walking the streets of an Italian village, Oyéjidé's characters exude humanity and confidence. Oyéjidé is invested in evolving the narrative of migrants, leveraging his background in fashion to assert his characters' dignity and fullness. Direct confrontations with the camera lure viewers in while an evocative score guides them through a dreamy, mystical journey.
