(5 Jan 2018) Zimbabwe's new president on Friday visited the country's main opposition leader who is battling cancer, but immediately ruled out sharing power.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accompanied by a former military leader who recently was appointed vice president, met with former prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai at his home.
It was a symbolic gesture by Mnangagwa, whose party and the military have vilified Tsvangirai for decades, calling him a puppet of the West.
Mnangagwa told reporters Tsvangirai "is fine. He is recuperating very well."
The president ruled out the possibility of a unity government. He has included no opposition figures in his Cabinet.
Tsvangirai was prime minister in a unity government between 2009 and 2013 after he beat Mnangagwa's predecessor and mentor, Robert Mugabe, but not with enough votes to avoid a second round. He boycotted the runoff, alleging military-led violence against his supporters.
An opposition alliance has endorsed Tsvangirai as its candidate for 2018 elections expected mid-year. But the opposition leader has battled colon cancer for more than two years.
Tsvangirai, who routinely travels to neighboring South Africa for treatment, did not speak to reporters.
He looked thinner than in November, when he cheerfully addressed reporters shortly after the military intervened to pressure the 93-year-old Mugabe to step down after his firing of Mnangagwa as vice president.

One of Zimbabwe’s most influential diplomats, Uebert Angel, offered to use his status to launder millions of dollars through a gold-smuggling scheme, during an undercover operation by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit).

Angel, appointed ambassador-at-large and a presidential envoy by Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa in March 2021, told reporters he would be able to carry large volumes of dirty cash into the country using his diplomatic status.

I was lucky last year to spend some time at Malilangwe in Zimbabwe with SAVE African Rhino Foundation​.

Here's a video from a morning I spent training with some men taking part in a ranger selection course. These are the heroes of rhino conservation - spending their days and nights patrolling and protecting these amazing animals.

Police clashed with protesters, some of them doctors, nurses, and civil workers who have been demonstrating over austerity measures that have led to a decrease in living conditions, Harare, Zimbabwe, Wednesday, November 6.

The country's economy has seen shortages of fuel and medicine, while prices of everyday goods have gone up.

Zimbabwe has a legacy of hyperinflation caused by economic mismanagement under ex-president Robert Mugabe.

The United States and European Union imposed sanctions on former President Mugabe and dozens of his allies in 2002. The sanctions were a response to what then-U.S. President George W. Bush called a systematic campaign to repress dissent and undermine Zimbabwe's democratic institutions.

The travel and financial sanctions targeted only Mugabe and his supporters, not the entire country. But Zimbabwean leaders, including current President Emmerson Mnangagwa, blame them for blocking development of Zimbabwe's economy. (AFP/VOA)
