Alvaro, the first cyclone of 2024, made landfall near Morombe in Madagascar on January 1, 2024. Over 16,100 people have been affected, including five deaths and 8,400 people displaced, by the disaster.
Last year, Madagascar was hit by disastrous storms in January and February of 2023.
Tropical storm Cheneso made landfall on January 19, 2023, along the northeastern coast of the country. It killed 33 people and affected 90,870 (TOS: National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management, BNGRC). Cyclone Freddy, made landfall along Madagascar’s south-eastern coast on February 21, 2023. At least 19,000 people were displaced and 17 people were killed in the disaster.
It is extremely difficult to evacuate and drain rainwater towards the sea when it rains in areas like Morombe province where Alvaro made landfall, according to media reports. Motor pumps are needed to remove stagnant water and early warning and preparedness would have averted the current disaster, experts quoted in these reports said.
The existing early warning systems in the Southern Africa region, including Madagascar, are inadequate to prevent loss of life and economic hardship.
‘The effects of Alvaro, a Severe Tropical Storm, underscore Madagascar’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters once again. It underlines the growing importance of Early Warning For All’, said the World Meteorological Organization.

National Route 5a bears the national designation merely in title. Describing the stretch that links Ambilobe in the northwest to Vohémar in the northeast would be an account of a 160 km pathway aptly coined as 'the track from hell.' Particularly challenging during the rainy months of January and February, this route transforms into a daunting obstacle course. What is typically a two to three-day journey can easily extend to more than 15 days, featuring ruts, mud pools, and sections too narrow for simultaneous passage of two trucks – a factor rendering it impractical for buses.

Despite its arduous nature, RN 5 is the sole conduit to the vanilla coast along the Indian Ocean's edge. A considerable drawback for the entire Northern region, a key economic hub in the country, as the road's subpar condition hampers the transportation of vanilla and various minerals abundant in the area. The predicament with RN 5 arises from neglect in maintenance, with the road deteriorating progressively. This vital economic axis appears forgotten by the state, further compounded by the wear inflicted by large cargo vehicles, resulting in potholes and numerous deviations. The deplorable state of the road profoundly impacts life in the region; for instance, farmers resort to using dhows (boats) to transport their produce to ensure sales in the capital.

On satellite imagery, we spotted a village inside a strange crater in Madagascar. We set out to learn how it got there.

Right in the center of the island nation of Madagascar there’s a strange, almost perfectly circular geological structure. It covers a bigger area than the city of Paris — and at first glance, it looks completely empty. But right in the center of that structure, there’s a single, isolated village: a few dozen houses, some fields of crops, and dirt roads stretching out in every direction.

When we first saw this village on Google Earth, its extreme remoteness fascinated us. Was the village full of people? How did they wind up there? And what did life look like in such a strange geography? To find out, we teamed up with a local team in Madagascar and fell down a rabbit hole of geology and mapping along the way. It’s a story of how continental shifts and volcanic geology came together to form a place for a group of people to call home.
