In West Africa, many smallholder poultry and fish farmers do not have access to feed protein sources, resulting in quantitative and qualitative feed shortages that affects the production of meat, eggs and fish.
A solution to develop sustainable household poultry farming and aquaculture systems is the use of insects, which are rich in protein as well as other valuable nutrient. As animal feed, the insects can be mass produced locally and on-farm.
The IFWA project has shown that fly larvae and termites are economically, socially and environmentally viable sources of protein for poultry and fish feed on smallholder farms in West Africa. Adding fly larvae and termites in the diet significantly enhances local chicken growth performances and egg production. The use of insects as feed provides new opportunities for income generation among local populations and will potentially have an effect on local food security.

Yams are tuber crops essential for food security in West Africa. However, tuber productivity of traditional cropping systems is much lower than the yield potential. This is due to the high level of soil fertility required by these plants and its rapid decrease when the plot is cropped with yams.
YAMSYS aims at developing sustainable methods for soil management that will allow establishing yams in long-term crop rotations to increase tuber yields and to enhance income of the actors working along the yam value chains in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. The project is developing innovations in integrated soil fertility management for yam-based cropping systems and is facilitating its adoption through the engagement of relevant stakeholders through innovation platforms.

"Mi pintura no es 'una manera de hacer pintura'
sino un modo de ver,
de pensar, de sentir y sugerir."
Es decir, un lenguaje y una propuesta, una mirada y un subrayado, una lectura de la evidencia y fundamentalmente de los intersticios; cada imagen encierra ese pensar, ese sentir y sugerir, y a cada imagen se le sobreponen nuestras sugerencias; se reconstruyen historias y se recomponen identidades; se recompone nuestra historia y nuestra identidad, y sin quizás escuchando esas historias se puede seguir soñando futuros.
La identidad de la que se habla en este caso es la de la población afrodescendiente en Latinoamérica, en el Uruguay; mejor dicho, el sabor afro de la cultura oriental. ¿Cómo llegaron, quiénes eran, qué hacían, cómo y dónde vivían, qué cantaban, por qué cantaban, por qué bailaban los negros del Uruguay? Y cómo esos por qué fueron coloreando y componiendo la cultura de los uruguayos.
Las obras que se presentan son todas de autores uruguayos y en su mayoría pertenecen a Pedro Figari. Entre otros, el Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, el Museo Blanes y el Museo Figari de Montevideo exponen obras de este artista.
También se incluyen obras de: Juan Carlos Amoretti, Ruben Galloza, Carlos Páez Vilaró y Marta Szerel.
Se presentan también algunas imágenes de figuras en papel maché de claro corte figariano (como el árbol, el abrazo, el negro con el tamboril), que pertenecen a la obra "Kit Básico para la fundación de un pueblo", de Cecilia Mattos y Nacho Seimanas, obra hecha con la idea de compartir comunitariamente esa reconstrucción de identidades retomando la iconografía figariana. La obra fue expuesta en abril de 2011 en el Museo Figari de Montevideo.
*Fotografías. Una gran parte de las fotografías expuestas son el hoy de ese sentir cultural de los uruguayos, expresado en este caso en la fiesta de carnaval que residentes uruguayos en Argentina realizaron en Buenos Aires, el 5 de marzo de 2011, en Avenida de Mayo; una fiesta de identidad oriental y rioplatense, otro abrazo de claro corte afrodescendiente.

Este género, emparentado con la tradición griot de África Central, resulta en general muy motivador para los alumnos en las escuelas, ya que se sienten muy familiarizados con los ritmos "radiofónicos". Con los tachos de pintura que se ven en el video pueden emularse muchos ritmos callejeros derivados e incluso el Second Line Drumming. En este caso, agregamos un twist al estilo afrobrasilero (1:22), para terminar con un arreglo tomado del tema "Killing in the name of" de Rage Against de Machine (2:14 - dedicado al Prof. Fabián Lupica de Quilmes)... Conocido como «el Rey del calypso», por popularizar este estilo musical caribeño de la década de los 50. Su canción más conocida (que le llevó al primer puesto en las listas de éxitos en 1957) tal vez sea Day-O (Banana boat song), forma parte de la banda sonora de Beetlejuice, de Tim Burton, junto con Jump in the Line.
