The political crisis in Tunisia has intensified following President Kais Saied's decision to dissolve parliament. This comes in the wake of freezing it in a power grab last July. The decree came just hours after the members of the last house held a plenary session online. The MP's voted to end his measures, which included the suspension of the chamber and the sacking of the prime minister, along with the seizure of legislative and judicial powers. Sami Hamdi, Managing Director of the International Interest, a global risk and intelligence company, joins us to unpack what's happening in Tunisia.

Tunisia is often called the only success story of the Arab Spring.

But ten years on, its democracy is looking fragile.

President Kais Saied has defended sacking the Prime Minister and suspending parliament, saying he acted lawfully under the constitution.

Tunisia's biggest political party, Ennahda, is calling for a national dialogue.

While some celebrated the President's decisions, others are warning of a return to authoritarianism.

So could Tunisia return to dictatorship?

An international delegation is assessing the damage caused to homes and infrastructure.

The Governor of Ukraine's Donetsk region says at least eight people have been killed in a Russian rocket attack.
It was targeting the city of Lyman.
Several more people were reportedly injured in the bombardment.

The US has defended plans to supply cluster bombs to Ukraine. Both the UN Secretary General and rights groups oppose the sending of the controversial weapons.

Tunisia's biggest political party, Ennahda, rallied in an immense crowd of supporters in the capital on Saturday in a show of strength that could fuel an ongoing dispute between the president and prime minister.

In one of the biggest demonstrations in Tunisia since the 2011 revolution, tens of thousands marched through central Tunis chanting "the people want national unity.” Protester Soufien Hamouda said the march was a protest against Tunisia "going backwards.”

Ennahda has backed Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi in a standoff with President Kais Saied over a cabinet reshuffle. The most recent election in 2019 delivered a fragmented parliament while propelling Saied, an independent, to the presidency. When the government collapsed after only five months in office, Saied nominated Mechichi as prime minister.

The head of the Ennahda party in parliament, Imed Khemiri, said the "responsible parties" must meet at the dialogue table to find a solution.
