Amid the increasing trend of medical professionals leaving Nigeria for better opportunities abroad, stakeholders in the healthcare sector are urging the Nigerian government to implement policies that would address the root causes of the medical brain drain.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed concern over the worsening shortage of medical professionals in the country. The association's president, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, emphasized the need for urgent government intervention to prevent further deterioration of the healthcare system.

The shortage of doctors, particularly in critical areas such as behavioural science and psychiatry, has led to the closure of wards in renowned hospitals like the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH). Dr. Abdullahi proposed a one-for-one replacement policy to address the acute shortage, citing that 900 doctors left the country between January and July 2023.

The call for favorable policies extends beyond addressing working conditions to include competitive remuneration, improved infrastructure, and increased investment in the healthcare sector.

Iran has seized a Chinese owned, Marshall Islands flagged oil tanker named the ADVANTAGE SWEET that was heading for Houston while it was transiting through international waters. The U.S. Navy has demanded that Iran release the ship immediately. The ship issued a distress call to the U.S. Navy at around 1pm today. Iran says that it seized the boat after it collided with one of their ships which is like complaining that a train hit your car.

The Chinese Navy attempted to block a Philippine ship in the South China Sea causing a near collision. Chinese ships often attempt to collide with Philippine ships, which often forces the Philippine navy to retreat. The Philippines says it’ll continue to expose China’s aggression and imperialism. The Oyo State Governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo sacked about two hundred Journalists from the Radio O-Y-O and Television Service of Oyo States (T.S.O.S) stations immediately he took over the Governorship of Oyo State. His major reason for terminating the appointments of these journalists was due to his complaint against the journalists for not covering his campaign trail properly during the 1983 Gubernatorial election.

Those journalists who had their appointments terminated by Governor Olunloyo were later re-instated back to their positions when Colonel Oladapo Popoola became the Military Governor of Oyo State in a military coup of January 1984 that swept off Civilain rule. Governor Omololu Olunloyo ruled Oyo State for only three months when he was removed from power.
