Nigerian President Bola Tinubu defends the recent decision to remove the popular petrol subsidy. Tinubu acknowledged that the move would impose an extra burden on citizens but he maintained that the money saved would be diverted to development projects and improving public services. The subsidy kept petrol prices cheap for decades in Africa's biggest economy but it became increasingly costly for the country.

Opeyemi Sowore, wife of the detained Nigerian journalist Omoyele Sowore, is calling on the U.N. to help bring her husband home. Sowore has been held by Nigeria's security forces since August. He was re-arrested in December, despite two court orders granting him bail.

A number of people taking part in a protest against police brutality have reportedly been shot dead or wounded in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos.

Witnesses said up to 12 people were killed and others wounded when soldiers opened fire. Amnesty International said it had "credible reports" of deaths.

The state governor said about 25 people had been wounded but denied there were any fatalities.

An indefinite 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Lagos and other regions.

Protests over a now-disbanded police unit - the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars) - have been taking place for two weeks, with demonstrators using the social media hashtag #EndSars to rally crowds.

As tensions continued to rise on Wednesday, police in different districts of Lagos fired shots in the air to disperse protesters defying the curfew, the BBC's Nduka Orjinmo reports from the capital, Abuja.

Protesters who briefly gathered again at the Lekki toll gate - where Tuesday's shootings took place - were forced out by police, he adds.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for "understanding and calm".

Solidarity marches for U.S. protesters rippling around the world reached Israel on Tuesday where hundreds of protesters waved “Black Lives Matter” signs and chanted “George Floyd.” They also called out another name: Solomon Teka.

Over the past five years, six young men of Ethiopian descent have been killed by cops, according to the Association for Education and Social Integration of Ethiopian Jews. Police data also shows Ethiopian Israelis are still disproportionately overrepresented in arrests and indictments even though they make up 2 percent of the population.

Young Ethiopian Israelis have led the protest movement against racism and called for systemic reform.
