In the year ahead, it’s unlikely we’ll quickly unravel the challenges of 2022— the rocketing cost of living, looming recession, the vagaries of climate, conflict and a fluid geopolitical environment. However, there is reason to be optimistic. The AfCFTA will be celebrating its second anniversary, a BRICS summit is coming to Africa, and activity on the Belt and Road Initiative, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, kicks up again. There are hopes the Tigrayan peace deal will hold, and the guns will go silent in DR Congo. Similarly, it is hoped, West Africa’s men in uniform will return to the barracks. Let's look at what lies ahead and ask the question: Can Africa turn the corner in 2023?

Africa is bearing the brunt of the global climate emergency. The UN says climate change threatens to expose over one hundred million vulnerable Africans to droughts, floods and extreme heat by 2030. One of the worst hit countries is Somalia.
Almost 8 million people there, or about half the country's population, are facing crisis hunger levels. The most affected area is the Bay region in the south. The UN says, barring a massive influx of assistance, that region is likely to see a full-scale famine in the coming months.
Clearly to prevent such impacts of climate change in Africa, something needs to be done urgently. And industrialized countries need to fulfill their funding promises for contributing the most to climate change. That's a point that was reiterated by Ghana's president Nana Akuffo Addo earlier this week in Rotterdam.
And that's why earlier this week African leaders traveled to the Africa Adaptation summit in Rotterdam, Netherlands. But European partners did not turn up. And that was strongly criticized by African leaders.

After almost a year of being out of action - Unit 1 of the Koeberg nuclear power station near Cape Town is back online.

Eskom said last night that the unit had been synchronised successfully with the power grid.

Koeberg is the country's only nuclear power station and it generates about 5% of Eskom's total power output.

While unit 1 is back the Minister in the Presidency has bemoaned other grid losses which means South Africa remains in stage 3 in terms of rolling blackouts today.

To discuss we're joined by Professor Sampson Mamphweli from the South African National Energy Development Institute.

It's Africa Day. And let's now look at the map of Africa in terms of economics. There are some exciting growth rates on the continent.
South Africa of course has a big economy so it's hard to get the growth rates of smaller economies that are industrializing rapidly. But compared with other African nations and even comparable nations, South Africa is underperforming. Remember South Africa used to be the largest economy but it now comes in third behind Nigeria and Egypt.
To discuss this we're now joined by George Sebulela who is the President and CEO of the South African United Business Confederation, SAUBC.

In his book, “Rescue Thyself: Change In Sub-Saharan Africa Must Come from Within,” Dr. Sylvanus Ayeni argues one reason hindering Africa’s development and progress is a failure in leadership.

The Nigerian-born retired neurosurgeon says addressing this hinderance requires a collective effort from citizens in holding leaders accountable and demanding development policies that benefit all.

VOA’s Jackson Mvunganyi spoke to Dr. Ayeni on the issues addressed in his book.
