Cape Verde is a collection of 12 islands off the coast of North-west Africa. Here, foreigners outnumber locals, and 9 percent of the country's GDP comes from expatriates. Cape Verde has few natural resources, little arable land and is prone to drought - just some of the reasons why many residents are desperate to move to greener pastures.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva on Monday on the first stop of his West Africa tour to discuss security challenges in the region. He praised the country as a “beacon of stability in the region.”

Cape Verde has sworn in its new government made up of 12 members compared to 20 in the previous administration.

The new government led by the country's Prime Minister Ulysses Correira whose party won 40 of the 72 seats in the legislative election, has promised to tackle corruption by creating about 45,000 jobs in five years.

More than 60 people are feared dead after a boat carrying migrants was found off the coast of Cape Verde in West Africa.

Thirty-eight people, were rescued, with footage showing them being helped ashore on the island of Sal.

Almost all those on board the boat, which was at sea for over a month, are thought to have been from Senegal.

Votes from the referendum in Burundi are being tallied that could allow President Pierre Nkurunziza to remain in office for two more seven year terms. However, latest reports show that some major incidents could also lead to influencing a vote for change. Africa 54’s Vincent Makori is joined by Reporter Mohammed Yusuf from Bujumbura, Burundi, to discuss further updates on the election.

Five African leaders representing the African Union have arrived in Burundi to push for a mediation process to end the crisis over President Pierre Nkurunziza's repeated terms in office.Robert Nagila has more from the capital, Bujumbura.

Citizens of Burundi could have their wishes granted as the country contemplates imposing no limits on the times the head of state seeks re-election. Current President, Pierre Nkurunziza’s attempt at a third term has left the country drenched in a yearlong violence.
