Wednesday, January 4th 1984.

Footage of the swearing-in ceremony of the military governors appointed by the new Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power on New Year's Eve after overthrowing the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari.

In keeping with the hardline tone of the new military regime, General Buhari's statement warned the governors to set an example and to set about tackling Nigeria's problems with the requite level of competence and resolve.

Seated to Buhari's right was Brigadier Tunde Idiagbon, who he appointed as chief of staff, Supreme Headquarters.

Transcript of General Buhari's statement:

"Gentlemen, as has already announced, the Supreme Military Council met yesterday, and after an exhaustive deliberation approved the appointment of military governors for the 19 states of the federation. Your choice for this assignment is based mainly on your personal merit and the confidence which the members of the Supreme Military Council have in your ability to discharge the responsibilities of the military governor, in the best interests of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and without fear or favour, affection or ill-will, in accordance with the oath which you have just taken. Sloth, indiscipline, corruption, Squander-mania, misuse and abuse of public office, for self or group aggrandisement, which has assumed debilitating proportions in the last few years, will be dealt with ruthlessly, no matter whoever may be involved. The private sector has also its share of crimes against the Nigerian economy, especially in the area of the distribution of basic commodities. Reports reaching us confirm large-scale hoarding of commodities. I have already warned that hoarding will not be tolerated. Gentlemen, I must point out that your assignment as military governors is a service posting. You are, therefore, subject to redeployment at any time as exigencies may dictate. All military governors are answerable to the chief of staff at Supreme headquarters."

Transcript of Governor being sworn in:

"I, (name indistinct), do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That, as a member of the Supreme Military Council of the Federal Republic for Nigeria, I will discharge my duties to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

Nigeria's hardline military regime led by General Muhammadu Buhari and Brigadier Babatunde Idiagbon declared a 'War on Indiscipline' ranging from economic crimes to conduct in the social and private spheres.

This excerpt from a speech by Brigadier Idiagbon given on March 23rd 1984, was part of the promulgation of a decree which banned street trading in Lagos.

Footage

Transcript of Idiagbon's words:

"I want you to bear in mind the need to emphasise self-discipline and leadership by good example. Begin by drawing public attention to little but important everyday manifestations of indiscipline such as rushing into buses, driving on the wrong side of the road, littering the streets, parks and dwelling compounds, cheating, taking undue advantage of scarcity to inflate prices for quick monetary gains, constituting ourselves into public nuisances, working without commitment and devoting little or no time to the upbringing of our children. Up to this moment there has been no formal declaration of war against indiscipline, it is my pleasure therefore to declare today a launching day for the war against indiscipline."

Source: Reuters News.

Note:

The regime's "War on Indiscipline" was satirized by the Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti in his song "Beasts of No Nation". The song's chorus plays on the irony of the Nigerian military accusing Nigerian citizens of being "useless", "senseless" and "indisciplined" (sic). It also refers to Buhari and Idiagbon as crazy men and like all other oppressors, they were "animals in human skin".

Fela had been convicted and imprisoned in 1984 for violating Nigeria's currency laws when leaving the country for a tour of the United States.

The Nigerian Army has inducted eight EZUGWU Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles built locally by Command Engineering Depot (CED).

The equipment were inducted into Operations Lafiya Dole and Sahel Sanity.

A Smart Factory also called Additive Manufacturing Technology, Vehicles Assembly shop and Officers/Soldiers accommodation, were also inaugurated at CED.

The Nigerian Army initiated collaboration among CED, Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria and Buffalo Engineering Technical Services Ltd., to produce the local MRAPs. Additional defence logistic requirements produced through the collaboration include Light Armoured Tactical Vehicle, Special Patrol Vehicle, Mobile Field Bakery and Mobile Borehole Drilling Machine among others.

On October 30, Buratai inspected five newly manufactured MRAP vehicles, and checked repairs of damaged/malfunctioning vehicles.

In addition, Nigeria has manufactured a vehicle that can operated with a drone to conduct surveillance operations. “We have also manufactured a surveillance vehicle with a drone attached to it to enhance Nigerian Army’s operations,” the official said.

The Nigerian Army under the leadership of Lt. General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, has removed General Olusegun Adeniyi, who appeared in a viral video urging military authorities to supply them with weapons and accurate intelligence to combat Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East region.

Adeniyi, who is Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, in the viral video lamented how his men were outgunned and ambushed while on an operation in Borno.

SaharaReporters on Tuesday exclusively gathered that a massive shake-up involving the redeployment of over 50 senior officers would be carried out today and Adeniyi is one of persons affected.
