Burkina Faso's transitional military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has responded to the failed coup attempt against him in late September 2023 by removing Lieutenant-Colonel Evrard Somda from his position as the Chief of Staff of the national gendarmerie. According to a national decree signed by Captain Ibrahim Traore and issued on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023, Lieutenant-Colonel Évrard Somda has been replaced as head of the national gendarmerie by Lieutenant-Colonel Kouagri Natama with immediate effect. This development comes after longstanding rumours of Lieutenant-Colonel Évrard Somda being at the heart of the failed plot to oust Captain Ibrahim Traore, with some sources speculating that he received as much as 25 billion CFA Francs, or roughly $40 million, to betray his country.
Fortunately, the coup attempt against Captain Ibrahim Traore was unsuccessful. After rumours of a possible coup appeared on the night of September 26, pro-Traoré social media accounts posted messages encouraging junta loyalists to go out and protest in favour of Traoré, and on the evening of September 27, 2023, the junta officially revealed that a coup attempt by high-ranking security officers was foiled by intelligence gathered by the Burkinabé intelligence agency. And Evrard Somda, who was once a highly respected officer, was weakened by the arrest of four officers, including two of his former close associates, on suspicion of involvement in a "plot against state security." The four officers arrested were Abdoul Aziz Aouoba, the commander of the Burkinabe Special Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Boubacar Keita, director of the Higher Institute of Civil Protection Studies, Lieutenant Colonel Cheikh Hamza Ouattara, commander of the special forces of the VDP, and Christophe Maiga, deputy commander of VDP special forces.

Radio Erena (“Our Eritrea”), a Tigrinya and Arabic language station broadcasting by satellite to Eritrea, began operating on June 15, 2009, in Paris, five days ahead of World Refugee Day. The result of an initiative by Eritrean journalists based abroad and supported by Reporters Without Borders, the station is offering freely-reported, independent news and information to Eritreans in Eritrea.

Independent of any political organisation or government, Radio Erena is offering news, cultural programmes, music and entertainment. A network of contributors based all over the world is providing the Paris-based staff with Tigrinya and arabic language programmes that are broadcast via NileSat.

Eritreans can tune into Radio Erena on the 11678 Mhz frequency with vertical polarisation (SR 27500, FEC 3/4).

Eritrea has had no free press since September 2001, when the few Asmara-based independent newspapers were closed down and their publishers and editors were arrested as part of a wave of round-ups ordered by President Issaias Afeworki.

Since then, the only news available to Eritreans in their national language has been provided by the state media – Eri-TV, Radio Dimtsi Hafash and the government daily Hadas Eritrea – which are all closely supervised by the information ministry.

Africa’s biggest prison for journalists, Eritrea has for the past two years been ranked last in the Reporters Without Borders index that measures the degree of respect for press freedom in a total of 173 countries.
