Mali’s government is asking residents who fled the northern city of Kidal to return home.
It is after government forces regained control of the city last week.
Many are from the semi-nomadic Tuareg ethnic group and are too afraid to come back.
The town was part of the Azawad movement's heartland, an alliance of Tuareg armed groups that hopes to gain autonomy.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports.

The junta leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger reaffirmed their commitment to the new alliance known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) on Dec. 30. The AES sees three junta-led countries distance themselves from the larger West African political bloc after coups in all three. The new alliance has signed a NATO-style pact that binds the signatories to assist one another in the event of an attack on any one of them. Russia has reopened its embassy in Burkina Faso after it was shut more than 30 years ago, officials have said. This comes after the last French soldiers left Niger earlier this month, with Paris taking the unusual step of closing its embassy in Niamey. Watch this video to know more.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, said Sunday they are leaving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) immediately.

All three countries, which were founding members of ECOWAS in 1975, are currently led by militaries that seized power from civilian leaders.

"After 49 years, the valiant peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger regretfully and with great disappointment observe that the (ECOWAS) organization has drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism," Colonel Amadou Abdramane, Niger junta spokesman, said in a statement.

The three countries were suspended from ECOWAS following the coups, and relations between them and the regional bloc have deteriorated for months.

"The organization notably failed to assist these states in their existential fight against terrorism and insecurity," Abdramane added.

Last year, they withdrew from an international force known as the G5 that was set up to fight Islamists in the Sahel region, forming their own so-called Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

It's a vote to approve or reject constitutional changes in Mali.
Supporters say the amendments will ease a transition from military rule to a civilian-led government.
But scepticism is growing.
After years of coups, political instability and social unrest, mistrust in authority continues to be a fundamental problem.
So is this referendum about actual change or just political theatre?
And are democratic elections even feasible in future, given the country's political and social tensions?

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom

Guests
Fatima Al Ansar, consultant on peace and security in Mali and the Sahel region.
Alex Vines, Director of the Africa Programme for Chatham House.
Marie-Roger Biloa, President of Africa International Media Group and political commentator on Africa affairs.

Police in Mauritania on Thursday fired teargas to disperse opposition members who were protesting against a referendum to be held on Saturday.

Opponents say the vote would pave way for President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to seek third consecutive term

The Police intervened as demonstrators opposing the constitutional amendment met in the west of the capital, Nouakchott.

The riot took place less than two hours to the start of a meeting in which President Abdel Aziz had promised he would make a…

Around ten thousand migrants have arrived on Spain's Canary Islands so far this year - most of them crossing from Mauritania. Last week, the European Union and Spain pledged 210 million euros to help Mauritania clamp down on smugglers and deter migrant boats. The Canary Islands are a first destination for people trying to reach continental Europe. The numbers of those attempting the dangerous Atlantic crossing are soaring – as are the numbers of those who die. Reporting by DW's Jan-Philipp Scholz and Jack Parrock.
