In this video I circled my city which is called Tete which is the largest city and capital of the homonymous Mozambican province, and administratively it is a municipality with an elected local government; and it is also, since December 2013, a district, a local unit of central government, headed by an administrator.

On April 23rd, 2020, Giovanni posted (to his Facebook) this edit of an early 1980's show in Germany (with the Eddie Palmieri's orchestra) BUT the video and audio were out of synch by 150 milliseconds. Originally, several selections from the show in Germany had been posted to Youtube, many many years ago, but they all had the very slight synchronization error... With all respect to the great master, I present this updated version!!

The tune is often labelled incorrectly as "La Comparsa," which is a totally different and much older composition by Ernesto Lecuona. Originally, "Camagueyanos y Habaneros" appeared on the 1965 album "Mambo Con Conga Es Mozambique" by the "La Perfecta" orchestra (led by Palmieri), and the conga drummer was Tommy López.

Some Cuban musicians feel that the New York Mozambique was an attempt to copy the original creation of Pello El Afrokan, and to capitalize on its success. I prefer to think of it as a respectful homage that clearly can never equal Pello's original concept of 19 conga (tumbadora) drums on stage, versus the New York style's 1, 2, or 3 at most.

In any case, this particular tune has become a vehicle for conga solos, and you can find numerous video examples of Giovanni soloing during his tenure with Pamieri in the 1980's. But this particular example has a very special feeling unlike any of the others.

When Giovanni stands up, he sings "rico melao para guarachar!"

I'D LIKE TO GET MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE TV PROGRAM(?) THIS CONCERT APPEARED ON. DOES ANYONE KNOW MORE ABOUT IT? THANK YO U!!! GRACIAS !!!! DANKE !!!!!

Lesson & improv in the New York / Puerto Rican / Nuyorikan / Boricua MOZAMBIQUE rhythm, not the original Cuban style of Pello el Afrokan...

New York "mozambique" is very similar to "conga de comparsa," the traditional Cuban Carnaval rhythm. The bell and bass drum patterns are similar, but one particular hand drum pattern (introduced approx. 1967 by Tommy Lopez, while playing with Manny Oquendo in Eddie Palmieri's La Perfecta on their MOLASSES album) has become an iconic way to interpret New York-style Mozambique on hand drums.

Mozambique is a vigorous style of Cuban music and dance derived, like the conga, from music of Cuban street carnivals or comparsas. It was invented or developed by Pello el Afrokan (Pedro Izquierdo) in 1963.

In New York City during the 1960s, Eddie Palmieri created a rhythm called Mozambique that was inspired by Izquierdo's creation of the same name. Although both rhythms are based on conga de comparsa drums, they have no parts in common. Even the clave patterns are different; Izquierdo's rhythm uses rumba clave, while Palmieri's uses son clave. Izquierdo’s mozambiques are, for the most part, in major keys. Palmieri’s mozambiques are mostly in minor keys. However, both groups primarily use chord progressions in a 2-3 clave sequence, and a trombone horn section.
