Malian Designer Awa Meite shares insights into the untold fashion story in Mali for our Fashion Africa Voices interview.

She highlights how studying in the USA made her decide to come back to Mali and to combat comments from her lecturers, she chose to travel in her own country by bus, stay two months in a village where women made baskets and eventually set up her own label and business.

Awa of www.AwaMeite.com believes "cotton is the ink" in the story of Mali and working with local people in the villages where they accept you for what you have or who you were, caused her to explore the handmade economy of Mali's textile industry.

But she also shares the reality of getting started in this country where she worked with the artisans. Her insights into textiles from the region continues to draw her and what may inspire any African Fashion Entrepreneur to also set up and start a business in Mali

Coming from India I was amazed to see how the African women uses the henna to beautify themselves.
They mentioned that it is not an easy process, as it takes hours to complete without eating anything.
Thus, they do it only in some special occasions.

History of the Bazin Riche fabric
The fabrics are imported from Germany, The Netherlands and China.

The fabric made at Getzner Textiles (Vorarlberg, Austria) is delivered to Mali, West Africa. In Vorarlberg, the fabric is called Getzner. The fabric is referred to as Bazin Riche in Africa. The fabric is mainly cotton and sometimes silk or wool. Bazin is the main fabric of Malian fashion.

The fabrics are pre-treated and once on route to Mali, they are dyed and painted with wax to create patterns on the fabric. The process of dying the fabric is done by hand. The fabric is then placed into a mixture of water and potato starch and a wooden stick is used to create a shimmer. Following this gold or silver thread is added around the pattern to add detail.

Bazin Riche fabric is famous mainly for its bright and bold colours and luxurious feel. Common colours of Bazin Riche include reds, yellows, greens, blues and purples.

The fabric is usually worn by Malian, Senegalese and Gambians for special occasions such as weddings, naming ceremonies etc.

The Bazin Riche is known as the "dancing fabric", due to its shine and swoosh noise during movement. The fabric is soft and shiny.

As well as clothing, Bazin Riche fabric is used to make tapestries, pillows, curtains, home décor etc.

Enjoy wearing your Bazin Riche styles elegantly, Fashionista's!

Antelope moon, gold date, desert flower... Hundreds of words describe the beauty of African women. No wonder - they walk through the world like queens. Their heads raised high, full of grace and elegance. Much time is devoted to the beauty, especially to the fantastic hair creations. Works of art based on ancient knowledge are created. The women of Africa have an infinite abundance of braided hairstyles.

On the Niger River, in Mali's capital Bamako, lies an important centre of hair art. In 1960 Bamako had 100,000 inhabitants. Today it has about two million. Among them are many women who have a new hairstyle put on their heads every two to four weeks. The fleeting masterpieces carry such fantastic names as "Bogotiginou" or "Dembaku", are called "I pass", "snake" or "mango blossom". So it's hardly surprising that men get carried away with compliments like "Your beautiful hairstyle makes me blind to your mistakes". Even pop stars and other heroes are quoted. So there is "Shakira" or "Mandela". Also, the humour does not come too briefly if for instance hair creations are called "crooked" or "Congo rat". And like everywhere else in the world, youth breaks with traditions. Western ideals are often imitated. Smooth, long artificial hair is en vogue. At every corner and end of Bamako, hand-painted signs are eye-catching and advertise a variety of hairstyles. Even advertising posters hang in trees on the roadsides of residential quarters. Below them are Tresseuses, as hair weavers in the former French colonies of Africa are known. Street tresseuses offer the cheapest deals. At the upper end, hip hair artists stand in exquisite salons with prices of up to 150 euros.

Hey Everybody? (watch in HD) Website:https://ukundahome.com
Today im sharing with you African Interior Design Ideas /how to decorate African Interior Design Styles in 2022.
There are so many ways you can achieve an African Interior Design Scheme In Your Home . In This video I talk on how you can design/decorate an African Interior Themed style|Home .
So how do you decorate an african interior design style in 2022 ?Decide on the style -african interior design style can be applied in any setting .whether you're going for contemporary african interior design style or you're going for BOHO which is from morocco or whether you're going for african traditional or luxury or safari african interior design style .like there's so many that you can choose from but when you're designing your space to apply that african design scheme into your home it can be applied anywhere ,yeah it can be applied in any style whether you're going for a minimalistic softy Look, whether you're going for scandi, whether you're going for contemporary you can always add that touch of africa in any interior design style. The good part about african interiors ,most of the things that are used are timeless like you don't have to worry. Let's talk about the Colour palettes. African colours are bold and neutral which is amazing .It gives you the best of both worlds and they're inspired by nature so you're going to think about mustard yellow, terracotta or burnt orange. Colors that are inspired from the earth tones. if you're not someone who is bold enough to go like for these vibrant colors you could just do an accent wall. i think an accent wall would really do great to keep your minds stimulated and very very active .it would really give you that african feeling and of course there is black and white which is mostly used colors when it comes to patterns -african patterns. And you'll see this in traditional wear ,baskets depending on which part you'll be to, like if you go to south africa it will be different but if you go to rwanda the patterns mostly are really in white and black and yeah it's amazing . How to decorate ?when you want that african touch into your home i would suggest that you go for light fixtures ,we're talking about lighting right now, because a lighting can really change a space and it can create that focal point, so when you're decorating your space and you want that african feel i would advise that you go for african-inspired fixtures, that have african elements, for instance i went to this place where i always do massages from, i was in east africa .Had these light fixtures which were made of calabash and i was like wow it really really looked amazing like it's warm, it's inviting it has that african feel and it's cozy i just love african luxury. You'd be surprised that there are so many that you could choose from,Ndebele necklace fixtures ,i've seen them online and they look amazing ,the basket chandeliers. i love how africans are getting creative. Though one thing that you have to make sure of is that once you want to buy something, just make sure it's benefiting the community of those hard-working women whether it's a rug. i hate it when just brands copy ideas and then they just duplicate things and just sell and they have no history of the culture !Cultural appropriation. Lemon Meringue Pie is said to have Swiss and English roots, dating back to the 1800’s. And although its origins may not be South African, it's a much-loved dessert in SA – widely made and hugely enjoyed.

Some options for the base of the pie is to use shortbread, while most will go for crushed Tennis, Marie or digestive biscuits mixed with butter.

The recipe I find works best (as demonstrated in the video) is set out below. It’s reliable, quick and easy.

What are you waiting for? Go try it!

Ingredients

1 can of condensed milk – 397 g (14 oz)
100 g of butter (3.5 oz)
2 egg yolks
4 egg whites
100 ml of lemon juice
5 ml of vanilla essence (1 teaspoon)
75 g of caster sugar (2.6 oz)
200 g of digestive biscuits (7 oz)

Method

- Place biscuits in a plastic bag and crush using a rolling pin
- Mix crumbs together with melted butter in a mixing bowl
- Add contents to a pie dish of approximately 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter
- Using the bottom of a round glass, press down on the crumbs to form a compact base of around 0.5 cm (0.2 in)
- Place in fridge for 10-15 minutes
- Preheat oven to 180°c (350°f)
- Pour condensed milk into mixing bowl, whisk while adding lemon juice a bit at a time
- Whisk the yolks in a separate bowl, then add them to the condensed milk mixture and mix well
- Pour mixture onto the biscuit base and bake for 10-15 minutes
- Beat the 4 egg whites and vanilla essence with an electric whisk, slowly adding in sugar. Continue beating until stiff peaks form
- Using a spatula, add the meringue mixture to the top of the baked pie - Spread evenly and finish with your preferred design
- Return the pie to the oven and bake for a further 20-25 minutes, or until the top begins to brown

Allow to cool to room temp, then refrigerate overnight. Best served chilled.

Now all that’s left to do is…

Enjoy!
