In this film we see impromptu Bata dancing executed by members of the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. This dance form as was highly influential in the evolution of Afro-Cuban dance. A significant portion of the Cuban population descended directly from this tribe, and were displaced there due to slavery. With them they brought their music, language, and dance. Elements of Bata can still be seen in Rumba (Cuban not ballroom form), Salsa, and Pachanga.

Africa Fashion - essential to any traditional Nigerian outfit, but often overlooked by international fashion design, is the Nigeria cap that men wear with their traditional clothes. So BattaBox headed out to the tailors and shops of Lagos to explore the caps and headwear of the three main ethnic groups in Nigeria - Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa.

"It's as if I'm collecting title!" says Olukayode as he wraps the orange beads around his neck and puts on the traditional red cap of the Ibgo, from Eastern Nigeria. "Nigerian clothing is unique and very attractive!"

The Igbo shopkeeper explains its significance: "In Iboland this red for chiefs, while ordinary person can wear black, brown green or white."

It is often called the Red Ozo or Ichie Okpu.

Although the idea of a 'chief' is a relatively novel idea for the Igbo people (it was introduced during the colonial period by the British), a significant amount of status is afforded to those wearing the red cap and beads.

"Even if you have money and cars - people will not recognise you so much unless you have cap,"says the shopkeeper.

BattaBox then visits the Hausa shop to explore the traditional caps from northern Nigeria:

"There are different types of cap for Hausa - ones for children, some to cover you head or some to wear with Turban and even 'politician cap - like Awolowo," explains the lady.

Most often the caps are coloured white with exotic embroidery.

The Hausa Fula Kube skull cap is often determined by the thickness and embroidery of the cap.

BattaBox then visits the tailor to have our own Yoruba Africa Fashion cap made and ask about the different varieties for the people of South West Nigeria.

They come in all colours and there are three main shapes.

The Gobi Yoruba cap which is often shaped to the right (especially if you are unmarried) or left and goes well with the buba or agbada.

The Abetiaja hat is often 'flapped' up or down and often seen in the rural areas of Nigeria.

Latest Trending Aso Oke Styles for Yoruba Couples.
In this YouTube video, we will be discussing traditional wedding attire for Yoruba couples. The Yoruba traditional wedding is a beautiful and vibrant celebration that is steeped in rich cultural tradition and symbolism. One of the most important elements of the Yoruba traditional wedding is the Aso-ebi, which is the traditional attire worn by the bride and groom as well as their families and friends.

The Aso-ebi typically consists of the Agbada, a flowing robe worn by the groom, and the George wrapper, a long piece of fabric worn by the bride. The Agbada is often made of Lace and is adorned with intricate beadwork, while the George wrapper is typically made of Aso-oke, a handwoven fabric that is traditionally dyed in bright, vibrant colors. The bride will also typically wear an Ipele, a shawl worn over the shoulders, and a variety of traditional jewelry, including beads and Adire, a type of tie-dye fabric.

The groom will typically wear a Fila, a traditional headgear, as well as a pair of traditional sandals. The headgear and sandals are typically adorned with intricate beadwork and other traditional motifs.

The Yoruba culture is known for its rich and vibrant wedding customs, and traditional wedding attire is an important part of these customs. The Yoruba bride and groom will typically wear matching Aso-ebi styles, with the bride's Aso-ebi being more elaborate and ornate than the groom's. The Yoruba wedding dress is typically made of traditional Yoruba wedding fabrics such as Aso-oke, Lace, and Adire.

The Yoruba wedding colors are typically bright and vibrant, with red, yellow, and green being among the most popular. These colors have deep symbolic meaning in Yoruba culture, and are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the couple.

The Yoruba engagement and traditional engagement customs are also an important part of the Yoruba wedding. The couple will typically exchange traditional engagement gifts, and the bride's family will typically give the groom's family Aso-ebi as a sign of acceptance and friendship.

In this video, we will take a detailed look at the traditional wedding attire worn by Yoruba couples, including the Aso-ebi, Agbada, Lace, George wrapper, Aso-oke, Ipele, Beads, Adire, Fila, Headgear, and other Yoruba wedding accessories. We will also explore the rich cultural symbolism and meaning behind these traditional garments and discuss the various Aso-ebi styles that are popular among Yoruba couples.
