African Fashion Week, hosted by African Fashion and Arts Movement Vancouver, kicked off on Feb. 19 showcasing much more than fashion, with vendors with handmade goods, food, featured performers, and music.

Attendees mingled amongst themselves and a sense of community was built throughout the space, which was something Yao Zeus Mohammed, founder, and producer of AFAM had hoped for.

“The importance of African Fashion Week to me is that it brings the community together, and it showcases the great talents we have in our community,” says Mohammed.

This is the fifth year that African Fashion Week has been hosted, however, last year AFAM could not host the event due to the COVID-19 restrictions. With restrictions eased, they were willing to host it this year even if it meant having only a quarter of the venue capacity.

During the intermission, attendees could buy finger food, Ghanaian jollof rice, pastries, meat, and vegetarian food options made by caterer Delali Adiamah.

“These are foods that you find at a party. So when you go to a wedding, when you go to a funeral … in Africa in Ghana, these are where you will find such food,” says Adiamah.
Founded in 2018 by Yao Zeus Mohammed, African Fashion and arts Movement (AFAM Vancouver )is the largest African fashion and Trade exhibition in British Columbia.

The story behind the song:
Each time we write/arrange a tune we take a journey. We have to admit-this journey took us a lot further than we expected. Retracing our steps reveals several factors that made this a reality. As we started arranging it we had serious writer's block. Perhaps some of the worst we've ever had. In fact, one day instead of writing we went around the entire studio with a can of WD-40 and coated every piece of metal to ensure that we were a squeak-free studio. Then on a whim we decided to back away and take an entirely new approach to the song-an African approach. It may seem random in retrospect, but at the time it was an exciting way to restart the arrangement. It was working, but our journey still was on foot until we called in Alex Boye, one of the most talented people we've ever met. Alex has this contagious energy that gave new... We'd like to thank from the bottom of our hearts, Duane Fielding who offered the helicopters and SkyHawk http://www.skyhawkhelicopters.com for not dropping the piano... :-) Half-way through the first day of shooting we discovered that, as typical guys, we had forgotten to bring ANY food or water to this remote location. We had two options: one, wrestle a mountain rodent and harvest cacti or two, starve. Duane, our head pilot, took pity on us. He took off (literally) and moments later landed in a Wendy's parking lot, ordered 5 of everything (sadly, he couldn't use the drive-through) ...took off again and brought us chicken sandwiches and hamburgers via airmail. Thank you Duane! Flying in your helicopter was a dream come true for us despite the lack of doors. =)

As a dish truly inspired by South Africa, Crispy Braised Pork Belly can be rich with flavor and texture. Some think of pork belly as a cheaper cut of meat, but just because it’s inexpensive doesn’t mean it can’t be the savory centerpiece needed for your next dinner party or event. When you infuse mild fruity flavors by adding a mix of slow-simmered apple and pears, Crispy Pork Belly becomes a gold-medal entrée every time.

Crispy Braised Pork Belly
Prep Time: 15min
Cook Time: 105 min
Serves: 6

Ingredients:

1.5lbs Pork Belly
6 cups vegetable Stock
2 carrots, large cubes
1 onion, quartered
1 celery stick, washed & chopped
1 leek, cleaned & quartered
7 tbsp Soya sauce
2 sprigs rosemary
2 sprigs thyme
2 tbsp coarse salt
3 cloves garlic
1 tbsp lemon oil

Method:
Preheat the oven to 390 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lay the belly fat side up, score through the fat, rub in the coarse salt. Set aside for ten min.
In a large pot, sweat the onions, celery, leeks, carrots, garlic and herbs. Add the vegetable stock and soya sauce.
Allow to simmer for ten min. in a large frying pan on low to medium heat.
Add the lemon oil and lie the belly fat side down.
Render the fat slowly for ten min. until hard and crispy.

Remove the belly and lie it on a baking tray, fat side up.
Add the braising liquid along with the vegetables and herbs to the baking tray.
Roast in the oven for 1hr. until meat is soft and delicate. Add more braising liquid if necessary.
Keep the remaining liquid for the cider jus.
