The U.S Army has officially named the XM1299 Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) the ‘Iron Thunder’ during a ceremony at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey last week.


Viewers may note that the ERCA program is one of five major programs that are part of the U.S Army’s long-range precision fires (LRPF) initiative.

As per a recent Congressional Research Service report on the Pentagon’s LRPF efforts,
“The Army says that longer-range artillery systems are needed to respond to what DoD calls the enemy anti-access, area-denial (A2/AD) environment (layered and integrated long-range
precision-strike systems, littoral anti-ship capabilities, air defenses, and long-range artillery and rocket systems), which can theoretically keep U.S. forces at bay and deny freedom of movement”

En 1980 et 1981, le professeur Roy Mackal, un biologiste de l’université de Chicago, monte deux expéditions dans la région reculée du lac Télé au Congo. Son but ? Prouver l’existence du fameux Mokélé-Mbembé. Un étrange animal observé depuis longtemps par les populations locales qui le décrivent comme ceci : c’est un grand vertébré d’allure reptilienne, il est amphibie et possède un long cou.

Ce dinosaure sauropode est brun ou gris, avec une petite tête qui ressemble à celle d’un serpent et il a une longue queue. Si on prend ces descriptions au premier degré, on pourrait penser que l’on est face à un survivant de l’ère des dinosaures, comme le diplodocus. Cela vous semble absurde ? C’était pourtant la conviction du professeur Mackal. Lui-même n’a pas pu observer cet animal étrange, mais il a pu relever quelques-unes de ses empreintes et a ramené de nombreux témoignages de ses expéditions. Voici ses conclusions :

"Je suis de plus en plus convaincu que nous sommes face à un animal réel, qui a peut-être disparu dans un passé récent, mais quand même un animal réel. Si on croit les congolais et les pygmées, ces animaux vivent encore aujourd’hui dans la rivière Likouala ou à proximité, et peut-être même dans le lac Télé. Il y a donc bien là-bas, une forme vivante, une espèce inconnue de la science".

Mackal écrira par après un livre intitulé " Living dinosaur " consacré au Mokélé-Mbembé, qui rencontrera un grand succès et qui va susciter des vocations auprès de nombreux autres chercheurs.

Michel Ballot, est sans doute celui qui connait le mieux le Mokélé-Mbembé de nos jours : il a organisé de très nombreuses expéditions pour le trouver au cours des 20 dernières années, notamment sur la rivière Likouala. Il a pu photographier des empreintes inconnues et il a récolté une cinquantaine de témoignages qui font état de rencontres entre des habitants locaux et le Mokélé. Tout cela est retranscrit dans son livre " A la recherche du Mokélé-Mbembé, un récit d’aventures. "

La plupart de ces témoignages se recoupent et sont de qualité. Et le contexte écologique est crédible. Cet animal est signalé dans des forêts primaires très grandes et encore intactes. Par exemple, la région de Lobéké où Michel Ballot a fait ses dernières recherches dans une zone du Cameroun frontalière avec le Congo est très très grande : elle équivaut à la superficie du Luxembourg. Il est donc crédible qu’on puisse encore y découvrir un grand animal inconnu. Mais se pourrait-il qu’il s’agisse d’un groupe de dinosaures qui aurait survécu jusqu’à nos jours ? C’est nettement moins plausible…

On nage en pleine cryptozoologie (la cryptozoologie est une discipline qui tente de démontrer l’existence d’animaux cachés encore inconnus de la science). En raison de la pandémie de Covid, les recherches et les expéditions de Michel Ballot ont été interrompues, mais il ne perd pas espoir : il repartira très bientôt sur la piste du mystérieux Mokélé-Mbembé !

Il est clair que la découverte d’un tel animal serait la découverte zoologique la plus extraordinaire depuis longtemps…

How to make the best Espresso Martini, with or without an actual espresso machine!

The Espresso Martini is to my mind something of an oddity. Even though it's kind of a desert drink, born in the club scene of the 1980's, it lays absurd claim to the title "Martini", and a host of other so called cocktail sins, it remains a respected (if begrudgingly so) modern classic. And that is because the Espresso Martini is genuinely delicious. On the face of it it would be easy to lump it in with the Appletini or a Key Lime Pie Martini or any other of a pile of "tini" drinks, but it's really nothin like them. It was invented by Dick Bradsell, a highly respected bartender who slung drinks in London in the 80's- he was known for making straightforward stripped down well balanced cocktails- he originally called it simply a Vodka Espresso, the Martini Moniker came later. Dick claims the drink was invented because an unnamed yet well known model/actress at the time asked him for a drink that would "Wake her up and then fuck her up", and he came up with the espresso martini on the spot. Dick's version calls for hot fresh espresso pulled right from the machine, which isn't so easy to come by if you don't have a machine, so I'm also going to create a version from Jeffrey Morgenthaler that calls for cold brew coffee instead- This particular version is a recipe that Jeff submitted to a cocktail contest in Punch magazine, so I'm not sure if it's his standard or "official" version of the drink, but having made it I find it to be perfect.
