For photos of MOROCCO 'N' ROLL please visit:
http://thomaskoenig.photoshelter.com

MOROCCO 'N' ROLL perform "Koumou Koumou" live @ Rocks (岩石音樂) in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) on Dec. 02, 2017.

MOROCCO 'N' ROLL—sometimes also billed as MOROCCA'N ROLL—is a new international band based in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) that plays Moroccan GNAWA music.
The band members hail from four different countries (Morocco, Russia, the USA and Taiwan). They play an ancient, traditional Moroccan music called GNAWA, mixed with western and Chinese music types (Latino, Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, etc.)

GNAWA music (غْناوة or كْناوة) is a rich Moroccan repertoire of ancient African Islamic spiritual religious songs and rhythms. Its well-preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. The music is often performed at communal nights of celebration dedicated to prayer and healing guided by the Gnawa MAALEM, or master musician, and their group of musicians and dancers. Though many of the influences that formed this music can be traced to sub-Saharan West-Africa, its traditional practice is concentrated in Morocco. Nowadays, GNAWA music has spread through many other countries in Africa and Europe.
This deeply hypnotic trance music—marked by low-tone, rhythmic GUIMBRI melodies, call-and-response singing, hand-clapping and KRAKEBS (qaraqib, قراقب; Moroccan cymbals)—may soon take a foothold in Taiwan as well thanks to MOROCCO 'N' ROLL...

The song "Koumou Koumou" is an old BERBER traditional of unknown source, rearranged by MOROCCO 'N' ROLL here.
The song was sung by Berber people who converted to Islam when they set out on their journey to Mecca.
"Koumou Koumou" literally means "Let's Stand Up Together", in the sense of "let's stand up and hit the road together, singing and making 'Duaa' (prayer)".

Enjoy this infectuous music!

Vocals/Krakebs: Rabia Iguimdrane ('Rabi')
Keyboard/Vocals: Vadim Novikov
Drums/Vocals: Craig Sheffield
Guitar: Levi Wang (汪修年)

The London-based producer follows up his 2013 debut with his latest album ‘In Morocco’; a potent brew of wistful North African strings, wild percussion, howling dogs and lashings of tape hiss.

The album marks a further departure - both musically and geographically - from Telemachus’ Hip Hop roots. Having re-located to the village of Mirleft in Southern Morocco for 2 months to surf the Atlantic and make the album, the result is tapestry of rich experience; a well-weathered body of work hot-footing through the sands to the electric beat of it’s own bohemian ambitions.

14 instrumental tracks deep, Telemachus employs the sonic sensibilities of a youth misspent soaking up the sounds of London’s bashment raves and pirate radio stations to take us on a Super-8 cinematic trail through the Moroccan Medina, beyond the bustling Souk and over the rolling verdant hills to adventure unknown.

Photos and video to the song “Desert Rose” by Sting. Images and video were taken while traveling in Morocco. Morocco is a North African country distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences. The Atlas Mountains extend some 2,500km across northwestern Africa, spanning Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, separating the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline from the Sahara Desert. Marrakesh’s medina, a maze-like medieval quarter, offers entertainment in its Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling ceramics, jewelry and metal lanterns. The Sahara is the largest hot desert and the third largest desert in the world after Antarctica and the Arctic. Its area of 9,200,000 square kilometers is comparable to the area of China or the United States.

Morocco is inhabited mostly by Arabs along with Berbers and other minorities. Its music is predominantly Arab, but Andalusian and other imported influences have had a major effect on the country's musical character. Rock-influenced shaabi bands are widespread, as is trance music with historical origins in Muslim music.

A prominent member of the Performing Musicians Association of
Nigeria (PMAN), Morocco led the Anambra chapter of the body
for eight years. In appreciation of his noble role in
stabilising the association and promoting music, the Anambra
PMAN honoured him with the title, ‘Premier, South-East’.

The music icon was devoted not just to his music and family
but also to his community. He was the leader of his community
for 10 years. When he voluntarily left office, the community
gave him the title of ‘Osisi Oma’ (Good Tree). Morocco was
married to Bridget and they had eight children: four males
and four females. He planned to retire at the age of 80 but
death truncated it.
