Sona Jobarteh hails from a long West African tradition of Griots and kora players; her grandfather was the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh.

Creating her own history, she has broken from the male-dominated kora tradition to become the family's first female virtuoso of the instrument.

Here Sona Jobarteh performs the traditional Malian song, Jarabi, accompanied by Femi Temowo on guitar and percussionist Robert Fordjour.

Sona Jobarteh performed in Weimar on invitation of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and its UNESCO Chair of Transcultural Music Studies (TMS). The TMS Chair regularly invites artists to bring the musicology students into contact with various musical cultures for inspiration and exchange. Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a west African Griot family. The Kora is one of the most important instruments belonging to the Manding peoples of West Africa (Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau). It belongs exclusively to griot families, and usually only men who are born into these families have the right to take up the instrument professionally. Sona Jobarteh combines various genres of African Music and western musical elements.

Kora players traditionally come from jali families, who have passed down their skills and historical knowledge of the Mandinka people through the generations. Mafu is the grandson of the great kora player Alhaji Bai Konte.

The Djembe is an essential ancient musical instrument of the Manding-speaking people in West Africa, dating back centuries. It is a hollow goblet-shaped object, usually covered with animal skin and artistically tied with ropes, producing enchanting rhythms which speak to the spirit and soul. As mystifying as the African society is, most of these rhythms were reserved for specific occasions, making them sacred and culturally significant.

Several rhythms have been composed by several skilful drummers and regions within the Djembe tradition to celebrate strength, farming, spirituality, festivity, etc. We bring you a few rhythms, their origin and cultural significance.
