Ali Farka Touré performs ‘Savane’ live at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in January 2005. The show, which at the time was his first European show for more than five years, was among the very last performances of Ali's touring career. Ali is accompanied by ngoni masters Bassekou Kouyate and Mama Sissoko, both of whom feature on the studio album 'Savane'.

Remastered and available on double vinyl for the first time, ‘Savane’ is the last solo album by the iconic Malian guitarist and desert blues pioneer. Recorded in Bamako and produced by Nick Gold, ‘Savane’ is Ali’s testament, a powerful reaffirmation of his umbilical link to Malian music and a potent reminder that the blues came from this part of Africa.

"Sastanàqqàm" from the album 'Elwan,' available now
Order ELWAN here: http://found.ee/tinariwen_store
directed by Jeremiah, assisted by Celidja Pornon / (c) 2017 Wedge / Anti- / Coop / Pias

“A thousand miles from their homeland in northern Mali, across a vast expanse of desert, the music of Tinariwen has found shelter in the hearts of six young musicians from M’hamid el Ghizlane. They were only boys when the desert rockers first visited their home, back in 2006, but they saw an immediate reflection of their own dreams and aspirations in the music they heard. In the years that followed they learned the Tinariwen songbook note for note, word for word, even though they couldn’t speak a word of Tamashek, the language of the Touareg.

When Tinariwen returned to M’hamid in 2016 to record a new album, those young disciples from M’hamid had achieved a remarkable mastery of the desert guitar repertoire. The torch had been passed from hand to hand and heart to heart across the great desert. The young musicians from M’hamid were invited to perform Abdallah’s ‘Sastaqanam’, standing in for their older brothers and playing with uncanny fidelity. But first the members of Tinariwen wrapped new turbans around the heads of their young acolytes, marking not only the passage from boyhood to manhood according to ancient desert custom, but also the transmission of their music across the generations, a transmission that is taking place in the hearts of youth from every corner of the great Sahara.”

SASTANÀQQÀM (I QUESTION YOU)

Ténéré, can you tell me of anything better
Than to have your friends and your mount,
And a brand new goatskin, watertight,
To find your way by the light
Of the four bright stars of heaven,
To know how to find water in
The unlikeliest of places,
And enlist the momentum of the wind
To help you move forward.

Tell me, Ténéré, how you and I
Can remain united, with no hate for each other.
Ténéré, I can now admit that
I have travelled far through this wide world.
Ténéré, I give you my oath
That as long as I’m alive,
I will always come back to you.

Two living legends from Africa, representing the male & female vocal tradition, in the beautiful acoustic music style from Mali.
Tracklist:
Habib Koité: Kanawa, Din Din Wo, Saramaya, Wassiye.
Oumou Sangare: Diya Gneba, Moussolou, Woula Bara Diagna, Diaraby Nene.

Habib Koité (Bambara: Habib Kuwate, born 1958 in Thiès, Senegal) is a solo singer, songwriter and guitarist, based in Mali. His band, Bamada, is a supergroup of West African musicians, which included Kélétigui Diabaté on balafon up until his death in 2012.
Koité is known primarily for his unique approach to playing the guitar by tuning it on a pentatonic scale and playing on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. Other pieces of his music sound more like the blues or flamenco which are two styles he learned under Khalilou Traore.

Koité's vocal style is intimate and relaxed, emphasizing calm, moody singing rather than operatic technical prowess. Members of Bamada play talking drum, guitar, bass, drum set, harmonica, violin, calabash, and balafon. Koité composes and arranges all songs, singing in English, French, and Bambara.
Koité was born in 1958 to musical parents, from whom he learned instrumentation by watching and listening. He joined the Bamako National Institute of Arts and became a conductor in 1978 after only six months of playing. He graduated in 1982, and formed his band Bamada in 1988. The name "Bamada" is a nickname for residents of Mali's capital city Bamako, and the word roughly translates as "In the mouth of the crocodile." Other members of the band were friends of Koité's from childhood.

Oumou Sangaré (born February 25, 1968 in Bamako, Mali) is a Grammy Award-winning Malian Wassoulou musician, sometimes referred to as "The Songbird of Wassoulou". Wassoulou is a historic region south of the Niger River, where the music descends from age old traditional and cultural songs, which is accompanied by a calabash. Sangaré's mother was the singer Aminata Diakité.

As a child, Oumou Sangaré sang in order to help her mother feed their family as her father had abandoned them. At the age of five, she was well known for her talents as a gifted singer. After making it to the finals of a contest for the nursery schools of Bamako, she performed in front of a crowd of 6,000 at the Omnisport Stadium. At 16, she went on tour with the percussion group Djoliba.
Sangaré recorded her first album, Moussoulou ("Women"), with Amadou Ba Guindo, a renowned maestro of Malian music. The album was very successful in Africa, with more than 200,000 copies sold.

With the help of Ali Farka Touré, Sangaré signed with the English label World Circuit. At the age of 21, she was already a star.

Oumou Sangaré is considered an ambassador of Wassoulou; her music has been inspired by the music and traditional dances of the region. She writes and composes her songs, which often include social criticism, especially concerning women's low status in society.

Since 1990, she has performed at some of the most important venues in the world: the Melbourne Opera, Roskilde festival, festival d'Essaouira, Opéra de la monnaie of Brussels.

Many of Sangaré's songs concern love and marriage, especially freedom of choice in marriage. Her 1989 album Moussoulou was an unprecedented West African hit. In 1995, she toured with Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti and Boukman Eksperyans. Other albums include Ko Sira (1993), Worotan (1996), and a 2-CD compilation Oumou (2004), all released on World Circuit Records. Sangaré supports the cause of women throughout the world. She was named an ambassador of the FAO in 2003 and won the UNESCO Prize in 2001 and was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 1998.

Oumou Sangaré is an advocate for women's rights, opposing child marriage and polygamy.

Sangaré is also involved in the world of business, including hotels, agriculture and automobiles. She has launched a car, the "Oum Sang", manufactured by a Chinese firm and marketed in conjunction with her own company Gonow Oum Sang. She is the owner of the 30-room Hotel Wassoulou in Mali's capital, Bamako, a haven for musicians and her own regular performing space. "I helped build the hotel myself. I did it to show women that you can make your life better by working. And many more are working these days, forming co-operatives to make soap or clothes."

Sangaré has also been a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, but says she does not want to be a politician: "While you're an artist, you're free to say what you think; when you're a politician, you follow instructions from higher up."

We kindly invite you to support Playing For Change and access free downloads and exclusive videos: http://bit.ly/JoinAndSupportPFC

We are proud to release a new video from our Live Outside series recently recorded and filmed in the ancient West African Village of Kirina, Mali. This performance features Mahamadou Diabate and Sayba Diabate on the traditional instruments, calabash and kora, as well as PFC Band member, Roberto Luti, on steel guitar. This village is the home of one of our PFC Foundation music programs—Ecole de Musique de Kirina, and also holds the roots to traditional Mali music and the Blues.

"Although it is one of the poorest economic places on earth, I have never seen happier people in my life and this teaches us that it's not about what we have or don't have but rather what we do with what we have and how we treat each other," says PFC co-founder Mark Johnson.

Let's use this performance as an inspiration to create a better world around us; one that understands that no matter how many things in life divide us, they are never as strong as the power of music to bring us back together. One heart and one song at a time.

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

Performance 2 July 2017
The Malinese diva, Oumou Sangaré, returns to the Africa Festival in Hertme after 24 years. After years of silence she is back: West African diva Oumou Sangaré is celebrated for her bright voice, her fresh, sensual songs and her power.
On her 18th, she still sang on the street in Bamako, Mali, but three years later Oumou Sangaré celebrated her great international breakthrough with her energetic, danceable songs. The success of her 1990's debut album Moussoulou ("Women") was partly due to her lyrics, which were openly taboo-breaking.
In 1993 she was a 25-year-old young woman at the stage in Hertme.
Anno 2017, Oumou Sangaré is a diva and a role model for women in Africa. She dares to challenge controversial subjects such as polygamy and female circumcision, but she also denotes female sensuality. With her bright voice and her unique, fresh approach to traditional music from hunters from the Wassoulou area, she also enjoys enchanting a Western audience. Beginning 2017, her new album will appear on the French label Nø Førmat!

Oumou Sangaré, lead song
Guimba Kouyaté, guitar
Elise Blanchard, bass guitar
Kandy Guira, background song
Jon Grandcamp, drums
Abou Diarra, Camel n'goni
Emma Lamadji, background song

'Voyageur' is out now on CD, LP or digital: http://worldcircuit.lnk.to/AFTVoyageur

A beautiful new and previously unheard track from the great Malian guitarist and king of the ‘Desert Blues’, Ali Farka Touré. ‘Cherie’ features Malian superstar diva Oumou Sangaré, a close long-time friend of Ali’s. Sangaré features on a total of 3 tracks from the album ‘Voyageur’ out now via World Circuit on CD, LP and digital formats.

Of the collaboration, which was recorded in London in 1995 and has never been released until now, Oumou comments: “Ali Farka Touré was not only an important artist, but he was also a humanitarian. He provided me with a lot of support when I started out in music, like a protective big brother, and he was proud of my achievements on African development. Ali and I often used to sing together for Malian audiences, and this session is the only recorded trace of our musical harmony. Sadly, Ali is no longer with us… but I know he would have been very pleased with it. I am very proud to have participated in this album.”

Produced by World Circuit’s Nick Gold with Ali’s son Vieux Farka Touré, ‘Voyageur’ is the first release of unheard Ali Farka Touré material since 2010’s posthumous Grammy-winning ‘Ali & Toumani’, and features a collection of gems captured at various points in Ali’s illustrious career, reaffirming Ali’s status as a globally revered legend of African music. Captured spontaneously over the course of 15 years, on the road and in the studio between sessions for other albums, the songs on ‘Voyageur’ were all of immense personal importance to Ali. They reflect his passionate commitment to the creativity and cultural diversity of his homeland, and a life spent in motion, as a traveller – a Voyageur – between the desert stages of Timbuktu, studios of West Hollywood, the concert halls of London and Tokyo, and tiny villages strung out on the Malian riverside, where Ali was – of course – known by everyone. ‘Safari’, the first track to be taken from the album, is also available now.

We’re excited to share with you the release of an album that grew out of our music school in Mali. Kirina Lolow is a traditional Malian music band formed by 2 former students of Ecole de musique de Kirina, two music teachers and the amazing young vocalist and composer Assetou Sissoko.

The band was formed in 2022 and has developed through a collaboration with other PFCF programs in Africa. In July 2022 the band was invited to perform in Tamale Ghana, home of the Bizung School of Music and Dance, and then traveled to Morocco to participate at the Zamane festival, organized by Joudour Sahara in M’Hamid el Ghizlane.

https://playingforchange.org/lagare-setou/

Watch the music video now of the first single Jarabi! Shot at Ecole de Musique de Kirina.

The album Lagare Setou, released today on all music platforms, was conceived in Mali, recorded in Ghana and Morocco and mixed in Spain over the last few months. It features 5 songs in the purest tradition of the mandinga music where the kora, balafon, talking drum and calabash lay down a steady and calm foundation for the vocal performance.

Amazingly, one year ago this outstanding band did not exist! This album is the result of a strong collaboration between PFCF programs in Africa to create new opportunities for each other in solidarity and in an aligning vision of African cultural development. Please support this cause so that more music can come out of these communities that lack such opportunities and resources. This album is a testament of such support to-date.

Lyrics:

Guess we gotta do what lovers do
Cause there’s no other way
And if you leave it all behind
It ain’t over
It ain’t over
There’s no other way

All this game you know I’m passing it
And they don’t understand the half of it
Everybody know I’m passionate
If it’s a party then I’m crashing it

Get mo, part it
Start dancing with somebody
Feelings
Not touching nobody (yet)

Guess we gotta do what lovers do
Cause there’s no other way
And it you leave it all behind
It ain’t over
It ain’t over
There’s no other way (Hey)

It’s the only way (True love)
It’s the only way, oh (True love)
I know it’s the only way (True love)
I know it’s the only way (True love)
Oh, it’s the only way

Give me your heart
I’ll give you mine
Can we decide (Let’s not waste no time) 3x
Whoa

All this game you know I’m passing it
And they don’t understand the half of it
Everybody know I’m passionate
If it’s a party then I’m crashing it

Get mo, part it
Start dancing with somebody
Feelings
Not touching nobody (yet)

Guess we gotta do what lovers do (Lovers do)
Cause there’s no other way (There’s no other way)
And it you leave it all behind
It ain’t over
It ain’t over
There’s no other way (Hey)

It’s the only way (True love)
It’s the only way (True love)
Oh, I know it’s the only way (True love)
I know it’s the only (True love)
Hey, it’s the only way

I wrote you a letter
Too many mistakes to facilitate presentation
It’s in the trash, balled up
Words tangle my heart up
They want it off the dribble, I’m a spot up
All my years , all my fears
My soul loathes vulnerability
But looking at your body
Is bringing thoughts of fertility
Can’t hide the mind in my joggers
Done went and got up
Talking bout loving
It’s gon’ get brought up
But even happy hearts are serious cause none wanna be played with
Even cold bodies wanna be laid with
Even sold bodies are thinking of their mothers and lovers
Moment they step in off a slave ship
