West African music is centered around rhythm. Whether you are just starting off your music studies, refining your rhythmic skills, or studying the music of Africa, this is a great set of tutorials for you. Unlike other "how to" videos on African rhythms or drumming out there, these tutorials are not geared around making drumming easy, but toward breaking down and analyzing these rhythm patterns to enrich your understanding and appreciation of the deeply complex, sophisticated, and beautiful music of West Africa.

This tutorial goes through the faster, more committed part of the Yankidi dance, also known as Makru. Unlike the first part of the dance, which uses mostly triplet subdivison which gives the pattern a lilting, flirtatious quality, this second part of the dance uses mainly quadruple subdivsion, also known as sixteenth note subdivision. This sudden increase in number of notes per beat is further accentuated by generally doubling the tempo as well, giving this second part of the dance an exciting and virtuosic quality.

If quadruple, or sixteenth note subdivision, sounds foreign to you, you may want to check out this earlier turorial:

Playing it right: axiology and the not-so-hidden curriculum
Mandy Carver, LCT Wits

Scratch the surface of any given knowledge practice, and you will find an underpinning set of values and beliefs. These are often taken for granted ideas that are seldom, if ever, brought into question, yet they infuse every aspect of their respective discipline. Becoming a legitimate knower requires us to buy into these values and to become ‘true believers’ before we can be taken seriously – whether we are academics, artists or scientists. Music provides an interesting case, because in order to make sense of it, we draw on the emotions, memories, feelings and judgements that it evokes for us as individuals. In fact, we find it difficult to separate these feeling-ful insights from the musical notes themselves. But doing it ‘right’ often goes beyond personal feelings: in music, the right way to play is not just a matter of producing ‘correct’ sounds, it is loaded with moral overtones and judgements about character and worth.

If values are important, how are they included in curricula? And what happens when they result in abuse and injustice? The LCT concept of axiology provides a way to think about this problem. In this Roundtable, I shall use Semantics to explore what happens to axiological meanings in music curricula, comparing conventional classical music education with African music curricula in South Africa. I will consider how values play out in curriculum and pedagogy, and the options teachers and students have to challenge what it means to play it right.

Mr Eazi, Recording Artist | Founder, emPawa Africa talks during the 2020 African Business Conference.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen significant demand for music originating from the African continent and its diaspora. Award-winning artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, and Mr Eazi have managed to navigate multiple markets. A global marketplace has emerged out of the world of afrobeats.

Has the economic attractiveness of African music grown in parallel to the increase in quality and demand? How are African artists being valued in the industry? Which income sources (streaming royalties, album/single sales, concerts/tours, endorsements, etc.) are driving revenues, and which are underperforming? For investors looking to understand the industry, who are the key stakeholders/players integral to the integration of African talent into the global market? What frameworks or blueprints exist to allow the integration of African music into the mainstream marketplace? Are there faults in that framework? Is there a need to adjust the Afrobeat sound to fit the global market?

Lastly, what roles can key stakeholders (regulators, artists, producers, distributors and consumers) both locally and in sustaining this growth and structuring the industry of African Music for longevity?"

The Krahn are an ethnic group of Liberia and Ivory Coast. This group belongs to the Kru language family and its people are sometimes referred to as the Wee, Guéré, Sapo, or Wobe. It is likely that Western contact with the Kru language is the primary reason for the development of these different names.
The Krahn arrived in an area of Liberia previously known as the "Grain Coast" as part of early 16th-century migrations from the northeast and what is now Ivory Coast. This migration occurred due to pressure on local populations resulting from the emigration of ethnic groups from western Sudan after the decline of medieval empires, as well as an increase in regional wars.
At the time, the African slave trade was becoming more prominent within Liberia. Although some Kru subgroups faced capture by Westerners, it was more common for the Krahn and other coastal peoples in Liberia to serve as local traders, brokering deals within the Western slave market. Many Kru committed suicide rather than face enslavement.

100 Cichlids (in 4K and HD) with relaxing music is a video I put together to use as a backdrop in a live stream. After finishing the video a figured, "Why not share it so everyone can enjoy these beautiful fish, this eye candy?" and I added some music and here you have it.

I hope you enjoy watching these stunning creatures while listening to some relaxing background music provided to me by the YouTube music library.

African Cichlids have been my passion for several years and now I am at a point where I will be starting over, from scratch, after our relocation from Los Angeles to Nashville, TN. It wasn't easy but all the fish and tanks you see in this video will have been sold (not without some pain) prior to the move.

I invite you to come along with me on my new adventure as I select tanks and fish for the new fish room I will be putting together in the garage of our Nashville home. To make sure you don't miss a beat I encourage you to hit that sub button and notification bell. It is appreciated!

What fish will I be keeping in my new set up? The future will no doubt include African Cichlids and I'm also considering adding Discus and Geophagus to the collection. Naturally, this can and probably will change, so stay tuned!

Important question: If you were starting from scratch, what would be in your fish room? Share your ideas in the comments below. I'm listening closely. We all learn from each other around here.

Never forget the channel motto: "Always be Learning!"

Thank you for stopping by and if you wish to support the channel, apart from and beyond spending your valuable time watching my videos, here are a couple simple ways to do so:

I am an Amazon Affiliate and earn commissions on qualifying purchases. What does that mean? I have an on-line Amazon store where I list fish keeping and live streaming products that I have used and recommend. You can visit my Amazon store here: www.amazon.com/shop/benochart
If you buy something from my store (or from anywhere on Amazon after using my link to get there) the channel gets a small commission. Your price doesn't increase by one cent.

Another way to support the channel is to visit the Teespring store shown under every one of my videos. At the Teespring store I list mugs, hoodies and other products that depict my favorite fish and channel logos and the motto: "Always be Learning!" You can get to my store by clicking here:
teespring.com/stores/ben-ocharts-store
and don't forget to use the code "LIVESTREAM" for a 10% discount at check-out.

Did you know that there's a friendly and helpful fish keeping group on Facebook called: "Ben O'Cichlid"? Cichlid is in the name but all fish keepers are welcome! If you're on FB, check it out. If you would like to join please be sure to answer all the join-in questions so that the admins approve your request (it's how we keep the trolls and bots out!).

Don't forget to stop by on Saturday@11am Central time for the Cichlids & Coffee live stream. We get into some fun discussions about taking care of our finned friends and, my favorite part, I get to answer your questions live. I try to do this most Saturdays.

Shout-outs to Christopher Martin for the Cichlids & Coffee logo, to Sam Penny for the Youtube channel banner art and to Phil Griffiths for the dropping fish video, for putting Sam's artwork in the surf and for the channel icon!
