Today we are leaving a wonder campsite in the mountain in Eswatini, and find new dirt roads to discover. But first, we need to find our way through the maze of a local village where we got lost... The single tracks through the small village eventually becomes a single track walking trail, with a small wooden walking bridge. Our motorbikes are too heavy, giving us no other option than to turn back, while being tormented by dogs. With the help of a friendly local we manage to escape the maze and eventually get back into the mountains on the dirt roads. With more dog attacks, fires and some interesting people we end the day in Lobombo, one of Eswatini's Capitals.

Eritrea's presidential advisor has told the United Nations that Ethiopia is making preparations for a military offensive and is contemplating full-scale war.

Border violence between troops from both sides earlier this month was the latest in a conflict that has dragged on for 16 years.

Eritrean presidential advisor Yemane Ghebreab is at the UN to defend his country against allegations of crimes against humanity.

Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reports from London.

(16 Feb 1999) English/Nat

Eritrean soldiers have shot down an Ethiopian helicopter after two days of intensive fighting along the border that divides the two countries.

Both the helicopter's pilot and co-pilot were killed when the Soviet built M-24 crashed to the ground and burst into flames.

Fighting continues despite both sides claiming military victory.

Eritreans rushed to the crash site after news quickly spread that their soldiers had shot down an Ethiopian helicopter on Sunday.

The soldiers danced around the wreckage celebrating a small, symbolic victory in the border war with Ethiopia.

The helicopter was shot down near the Red Sea port town of Assab where the latest bout of fighting has broken out.

The battle for disputed territory along the border that divides Eritrea and Ethiopia first broke out last May.

More than one thousand people were killed before fighting waned in mid-June,
following the implementation of a U.S brokered moratorium on air strikes.

But fighting flared up again just over a week ago, with the Eritreans claiming Ethiopia is using aircraft in violation of the U.S deal.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We shot down an Ethiopian helicopter early in the morning."
(NB - it may sound like the soldier is saying Egyptian helicopter but it is definitely Ethiopian)
SUPER CAPTION: Ethiopian soldier

On Monday, shelling just west of Assab went on for three hours and ended shortly after noon.

The port of Assab is an important target for landlocked Ethiopia because it was once the country's main transit point for import and export cargo.

Isaias Afwerki, who fought to liberate Eritrea from Ethiopian occupation, has been viciously attacked by Western media outlets and NGOs for decades. However, when breaking down international relations and the history of US hegemony, Afwerki has a few criticisms of his own and certainly doesn't hold back when sharing them with the world. During the Russia-Africa Summit held in July in Saint Petersburg, he spoke frankly to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the need for Moscow's leadership to confront US hegemony across the global south.

Afwerki explained that the Cold War dynamics witnessed today not only affect large countries. Small states, like Eritrea, are being bullied because they refuse to bow to Western terms of engagement.

In Afwerki's eyes, managing these hegemonic tendencies is the only way to achieve peace and development. What do you think about the Eritrean president's statements and his search for an ally in Russia?

A video I made in 2009 of a magical place inhabited by wonderful people. The village of Dekilafay, near the town of Adi Keih, Debub, Eritrea. The video story is told from the point of view of Milyon, a small boy. It shows traditional aspects of Eritrean life - taita, coffee ceremonies, feeding animals, etc. The language used is Tigrinya. If anyone is missing home in Eritrea, this video will cheer you up!
