The Ethiopian city of Harare is known for the tradition of feeding hyenas every night. It dates back to a famine in the 19th century, when food was offered to the hyenas to deter them from eating their livestock.

These weren't just pets, they were **offerings to the gods**. Cats for Bastet, the cat goddess, and crocodiles for Sobek, the god of the Nile.

Imagine the scene: a procession carrying a **perfectly preserved baboon** to appease a deity!

We are PetsArePeopleTooEgypt We are a dog and cat hotel in Cairo Egypt but we also rescue street animals (street dogs and cats). There is a big problem with street animals in Cairo and we have been doing this for over 2 years. Up until now all of the animals we have rescued we have paid for all their costs ourselves (food, medical, cleaning etc) and have treated them like our own or our clients dogs before putting them up for adoption free of charge, fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered if of age. We are very particular about who we let adopt and if we don't feel the animal is going to a loving forever home we hold out until we can be sure. This is a great cost on us and now we need help to continue doing it and help more where possible. Please give whatever you can to help us turn these animals into some of the most grateful and happy pets we have ever seen.
Thank you

Dozens of animal mummies, including lion cubs, discovered in Egypt

up to five mummified lion cubs as well as several crocodiles, birds, a mongoose and cats have been discovered in Egypt.

Items from the new find were displayed at a makeshift exhibition at the famed Step Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara, south of Cairo, near where mummies and other artefacts have been found in a vast necropolis.

Archaeologists frequently find mummified cats but the recovery of a lion is rare. In 2004, the first lion skeleton was found in Saqqara, revealing the sacred status of the animal in ancient times.

We are finding here hundreds of objects,' said Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany.

'All of them are very interesting from the Egyptological point of view to know better this area.'

The Saqqara plateau has been home to at least 11 pyramids, including the Step Pyramid and hundreds of tombs of ancient officials, ranging from the 1st Dynasty (2920 B.C.-2770 B.C.) to the Coptic period (395-642).

Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, revealed to reporters local archaeologists had uncovered a cache that includes hundreds of mummified animals, birds and crocodiles.

He said two of the mummified animals have been confirmed as lion cubs and three more are believed to be cubs but testing is being carried out.
Wooden and bronze cat statues, which represents the ancient goddess Bastet and a rare large stone scarab, which Waziri hailed as 'the largest all over the world' were uncovered.

Two mummies of ichneumon, or the Egyptian mongoose, wrapped in linen bandages and wooden and tin-glazed statuettes of the goddess Sekhmet, represented as a woman with the head of a lioness, have also gone on show.
