Across the rough grasslands of Lesotho, jockeys wearing wool balaclavas and scruffy old helmets urge their horses towards the finishing post as hundreds of spectators cheer from a nearby hillside. Horseracing in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho is not like at Ascot or Longchamp, but it is still highly competitive, involves lots of gambling and is a major social occasion.

A local rides his fancy, grey stallion in Lesotho en route to Mokhotlong. The horse was in relatively good condition even though his bit was made of twisted wire.

Lesotho's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Thabo Mafosi has opened the annual Wool and Mohair Promotion show in Maseru.


Lesotho ranks in the top five biggest global mohair suppliers, and controls close to a quarter of the global supply.

Alma is a small town situated south of Vaalwater in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The area is surrounded by green-gray bushveld vegetation and a few private game reserves are located in the malaria free area.

Marakele National Park is part of the Waterberg Biosphere in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Marakele is home to the big five as well as sixteen species of antelopes and over 250 species of birds.

The UNESCO listed Cradle of Humankind, about 50 km northwest of Johannesburg, contains a complex of limestone caves. The Sterkfontein Caves were the site of the discovery of a 2.3-million-year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus. Nearby, the Rising Star Cave system contains the Dinaledi Chamber in which fifteen fossil skeletons of an extinct species of hominin were discovered. However, ccording to existing archaeological and fossil evidence, the genuine Cradle of Humankind is the Afar Triangle in East Africa.

The Pilanesberg Game Reserve, located north of Rustenburg, has a rich array of southern African wildlife including the Big Five. Most of the animal species of southern Africa live in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve today, including lions, elephants, black rhinos, white rhinos, Cape buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, Hartmann's mountain zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and the Cape wild dog. Over 360 bird species were counted. The Pilanesberg is not in a location which the Big Five animals would naturally inhabit, however they have been brought into the 550 square kilometers of African bushland.

Hartbeespoort, the collective name of a few smaller towns situated around the Hartbeespoort Dam, is popular with visitors from the nearby Gauteng Province.

Krugersdorp is a mining city in the West Rand.

The bronze sculpture of former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela can be found on the Union Buildings grounds in Pretoria.

Potchefstroom is an academic city in the North West Province of South Africa.

Mtubatuba is a town north of Richards Bay close to the entrance of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal.

The dinosaur footprints at Subeng are embedded in a sandstone slab in a small stream and rank among the most important sites of its type in Lesotho. Discovered in 1955, Subeng incorporates the footprints of at least three and possibly as many as six different species of dinosaur, some with five toes on their feet, and others with three.
