Madagascar is located in the southwestern Indian Ocean and is separated from the African coast by the 250-mile- (400-km-) wide Mozambique Channel.

April to October are, in general, the best months to visit Madagascar. This dry, cool season is what naturalists refer to as the austral winter. Overall, this is a good time to travel: days are bright and usually warm to very warm and nights mild.

To plan a trip to Madagascar, you will need to consider the following:

Visa requirements: Visitors to Madagascar must have a valid passport and a visa, which can be obtained either in advance or upon arrival.

Travel dates: Madagascar has two main seasons, the dry season (May to October) and the rainy season (November to April). The best time to visit Madagascar is during the dry season as the weather is more pleasant and it is easier to travel around the country.

Transportation: Madagascar has several international airports, the most popular being Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo. You can also fly to other major cities such as Nosy Be, Tamatave and Diego Suarez.

Accommodation: Madagascar has a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses. It's best to book your accommodation in advance to ensure availability.

Activities: Madagascar offers plenty of activities for visitors, including wildlife safaris, hiking, cultural tours, and beach vacations. The most popular attraction is the Lemurs and the Baobab trees.

Vaccinations: It is recommended to be up to date with routine vaccinations before traveling to Madagascar. Consult your doctor to know the recommended vaccinations for your trip.

Health and Safety: Malaria is a risk in certain areas of Madagascar so you should take preventative measures such as taking antimalarial medication and using insect repellent. It is also a good idea to have travel insurance in case of any health emergencies.

Walk through the local market in Tulear (Toliary) Madagascar. I also walk through the local City Center park where events are held and people congregate during the day-time.

Madagascar is not really Africa: this is a country from the Indian Ocean. No amount of travel in Africa will prepare you for the uniqueness of the local sires, the intricate tombs that sometimes appear to outdo the homes of the living, or the famadihana exhumation events that - literally -- give the lifeless a party once every eight years, permitting people to arrive face to face with all the deceased. Rapidly you discover that even though elements of Malagasy life - love of cattle, classic clothing, rose bush taxis (taxis brousse, The people reside in a world centered by mood and complex cultural guidelines derived from completely different roots on the other side of the Indian Ocean.

The family of 25 invited us to join them for a family feast of goose. One goose feeds the entire family, and we were fortunate enough to be able to experience this family meal.

In this episode, follow our colleague Susanna Seymour as she goes to Antananarivo, Madagascar. This region was hit by a severe tropical storm in 2015, causing unprecedented floods and damages that particularly affected a crucial dyke safeguarding the city and its residents.

In response to this crisis, the European Investment Bank provided 40 million euros to help Madagascar's reconstruction efforts. The goal was not only to repair dykes, bridges, and roads but also to fortify them against increasing threats of extreme weather events fueled by climate change.

During her journey, Susanna engages with residents who share their stories and discuss how the dyke's reconstruction has positively transformed their lives.

Join us on this impactful journey and learn more about the resilience and renewal of Antananarivo!
