Central Kalahari Game Reserve;

As the sun rises, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve comes alive with the resounding roars of its majestic inhabitants, the undisputed rulers of this untamed realm. We arrived in this majestic wilderness after spending a couple of days at Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

The roads were completely flooded and this made it very slow going, taking us more than three hours just to reach the Matswere gate Welcome to an epic overlanding journey through the captivating landscapes of Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

We explore this untamed paradise, unraveling its remarkable wildlife and diverse ecosystems. Stretching across vast horizons, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve embodies the enigmatic spirit of the Kalahari Desert. Its ancient sands whisper tales of survival, adaptation, and the indomitable will of nature. We immerse ourselves in its mysteries, unveiling a realm of unparalleled wonder. As we traverse the rugged terrain, the dust-laden trails lead us further into the heart of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The allure of the unknown pulls us deeper into its wild embrace. Each turn reveals a new vista, captivating us with the sheer vastness of this untamed paradise.

The cheetah, known for its incredible speed and sleek physique, is a remarkable creature that has adapted to the harsh habitat of the CKGR. The short green grasslands serve as an ideal hunting ground for the cheetah. The open terrain provides them with an unobstructed view of their surroundings, allowing them to spot potential prey from a distance. It effortlessly blends with the vibrant surroundings, creating a mesmerizing sight. The contrast of the cheetah's golden coat against the lush green grass and backdrop creates a striking image that captivates the imagination.

Deep within the Central Kalahari Game Reserve lies a hidden gem—Passarge Valley. We venture into the mesmerizing expanse of the valley, discovering an oasis of life amidst the arid wilderness. Its lush vegetation and secret water sources provide sanctuary for a multitude of wildlife, enchanting us with their presence. Passarge valley is truly a remarkable stretch in the CKGR. We were pleasantly surprised with all the game and youngsters in the area. The birdlife is also fantastic, but you must sit back and take your time to actually find them. The secluded and private campsites are some of the best in the park though.

Leopard pan is often overlooked when visiting the CKGR. There is a great deal of game and predators frequently visit this pan. A Bonus is that there is only one campsite at the edge of the pan.

Khumaga Camp in the Makgadikgadi National Park;

The river road has views over the Boteti River where most of the animals congregate, and the views are just stunning The night critters decided to join us for our braai. Always wear closed shoes when out in the dark at night. Camping in Khumaga allows you to truly connect with nature. Falling asleep to the gentle sounds of the river and waking up to a chorus of birdsong creates a sense of serenity and harmony with the environment. It's an opportunity to experience the magic of the African wilderness firsthand. Khumaga, with the majestic Boteti River and breathtakingly beautiful views, is a destination that promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of nature. Whether you're an avid wildlife enthusiast, a bird lover, or someone seeking solace in the beauty of the natural world, this extraordinary place offers an unparalleled experience that will leave you in awe of the beauty Botswana has to offer.

Follow us on our road trip safari through southern Africa's wildlife paradise Botswana. We drove through most of Botswana, including all the wildlife-rich areas like the Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe Nationalpark including the Chobe Riverfront and the Kalahari. We explored the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the center of the country, the Gcwihaba Caverns in the West and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the south. We also shortly ventured into Zimbabwe to marvel upon the majestic Victoria Falls. We were lucky enough to spot most of the big, and many small, animals which call Botswana home. These include elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, kudus, oryx, ostriches, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, serval cats, warthogs, springboks, impalas and many more.

Thinking about visiting Burkina Faso? Watch this video to see bucket list places you must visit on your trip. Burkina Faso is one of the friendliest and, until recently, one of the safest, countries in all of Africa. Although it receives only a small number of tourists per year, it is an excellent destination for anyone interested in seeing a beautiful West African country and exploring African culture and music.

How many of the places you have seen already in this video? Don't forget to mention in comments :)
Don't forget to subscribe so that you can watch new videos posted daily!

Until the end of the 19th century, the history of Burkina Faso was dominated by the empire-building Mossi. The French arrived and claimed the area in 1896, but Mossi resistance ended only with the capture of their capital Ouagadougou in 1901. The colony of Upper Volta was established in 1919, but it was dismembered and reconstituted several times until the present borders were recognized in 1947.

Burkina Faso's seventeen million people belong to two major West African cultural groups—the Voltaic and the Mande (whose common language is Dioula). People from Burkina Faso are called Burkinabé. The Voltaic Mossi make up about one-half of the population. The Mossi claim descent from warriors who migrated to present-day Burkina Faso from Ghana and established an empire that lasted more than 800 years. Predominantly farmers, the Mossi kingdom is still led by the Mogho Naba, whose court is in Ouagadougou.

While over 60 ethnic groups (and just as many languages) can be found in Burkina, the country may also be divided into these primary ethnic regions:

Touareg: Extreme north

Peul/Fulani: Far north, just south of the Tourags

Gourmantché: East

Mossi: Central plateau centred around Ouagadougou and stretching north to Ouahigouya and south to the Ghanaian border

Gourounsi: Southern Burkina Faso between Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso

Lobi: South-west along the borders with Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire

Bobo/Dioula: West centered around Bobo-Dioulasso

Senoufo: Southwest along the borders with Mali and Côte d'Ivoire

Burkina Faso is an ethnically integrated, secular state. Most of Burkina's people are concentrated in the south and centre of the country, sometimes exceeding 48 per square kilometre (125 mi²). Several hundred thousand farm workers migrate south every year to Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana. These flows of workers are obviously affected by external events; the civil war in Cote d'Ivoire have meant that hundreds of thousands of Burkinabé returned to Burkina Faso. A plurality of Burkinabé are Muslim, but most also adhere to traditional African religions. The introduction of Islam to Burkina Faso was initially resisted by the Mossi rulers. Christians, both Roman Catholics and Protestants, comprise about 25% of the population, with their largest concentration in urban areas.

Cities
- Ouagadougou, also known as Ouaga (pronounced "Wa-Gha"), is the capital city, located in the centre of the country, in the area known as the Mossi Plateau.
- Banfora
- Bobo-Dioulasso — the country's second largest city, located in the southwest.
- Dédougou
- Gaoua — Gaoua is near the Ruins of Loropéni, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Koudougou
- Ouahigouya

Talk
French is the official language; obviously, outside the big cities, most people are not so fluent in French as the city-dwellers. Many African languages of the Sudanic family are widely spoken. The most common language is Mooré. Do not expect to get around with English as in most other parts of the world: West Africa is mainly Francophone, and English is virtually unknown. Among wealthy locals and government/company officials though, only French is spoken, as reverting to Dioula is considered low-class.

Beware that the accent and word use in the French spoken in West Africa is quite different to that spoken in France, and can present difficulties if your French is not very strong.

Festivals
Burkina Faso is the home of music in West Africa.
- Festival International de la Culture Hip Hop (International Festival of Hip Hop Culture)—Ouagadougou & Bobo-Dioulasso; October; Two weeks of Hip Hop performances
- Festival Jazz (Jazz Festival)—Ouaga & Bobo; April/May; Features big names from around the continent
- Festival des Masques et des Arts (FESTIMA; Arts & Masks Festival)—Dédougou; March of even-numbered years; Hundreds of troupes of mask dancers from across West Africa perform.
- Festival Panafricain du Cinéma (FESPACO;Panafrican Film Festival)—Ouaga; Feb/Mar of odd-numbered years; Africa's largest film festival held every other year brings stars and filmmakers from across the continent.
- Semaine Nationale de la Culture (National Culture Week)—Bobo; March/April; music, dance, theatre, & masquerades fill the air this week in Bobo

Welcome to Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, brimming with rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and a vibrant tapestry of traditions waiting to be explored. In this 2000-word journey, we delve deep into the heart of Burkina Faso, uncovering its fascinating facts, hidden gems, and unique characteristics that make it a truly remarkable destination.

Situated in the Sahel region, Burkina Faso is bordered by six countries, including Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast, Togo and Ghana to the south. Despite its modest size, Burkina Faso boasts a diverse landscape ranging from the Sahel savanna in the north to the Sudanian savanna in the south, dotted with lush forests, majestic mountains, and winding rivers.

One of the most captivating aspects of Burkina Faso is its rich cultural heritage, shaped by a tapestry of ethnic groups, each contributing their unique customs, languages, and traditions to the country's cultural mosaic. The Mossi people, the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso, have a rich history dating back centuries and have played a significant role in shaping the country's identity. Their elaborate festivals, such as the biennial Moro-Naba ceremony in Ouagadougou, the capital city, offer a glimpse into their vibrant cultural heritage.

Burkina Faso is also renowned for its dynamic arts scene, with traditional crafts such as pottery, weaving, and wood carving thriving alongside contemporary expressions of visual arts, music, and dance. The vibrant colors and intricate designs of Burkinabe textiles, particularly the distinctive Faso Dan Fani cloth, reflect the country's cultural diversity and artistic ingenuity.

One of Burkina Faso's most iconic cultural events is the FESPACO (Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou), often referred to as the "African Cannes." Held biennially in Ouagadougou, FESPACO showcases the best of African cinema, providing a platform for filmmakers from across the continent to share their stories and celebrate African culture and heritage.

In addition to its cultural riches, Burkina Faso is home to a wealth of natural wonders waiting to be explored. The W National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Niger and Benin, is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and rare bird species. The stunning landscapes of the Sindou Peaks and the Banfora Cascades offer breathtaking views and opportunities for outdoor adventures, from hiking and rock climbing to swimming and boating.

But perhaps what truly sets Burkina Faso apart is the warmth and hospitality of its people. Known as the "Land of Honest Men," Burkina Faso welcomes visitors with open arms and offers a glimpse into the daily lives and traditions of its inhabitants through homestays and cultural exchanges. Whether sipping freshly brewed dolo (millet beer) in a village square or sharing a meal of tô (a staple dish made from millet or sorghum) with a local family, visitors to Burkina Faso are sure to be touched by the genuine kindness and generosity of its people.

Despite its many attractions, Burkina Faso faces challenges, including poverty, political instability, and environmental degradation. However, the resilience and spirit of the Burkinabe people shine through, driving efforts to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for generations to come.

In conclusion, Burkina Faso is a land of contrasts and contradictions, where ancient traditions coexist with modern aspirations, and natural beauty meets cultural diversity. Whether you're drawn to its vibrant festivals, breathtaking landscapes, or rich cultural heritage, Burkina Faso offers a truly unforgettable experience that will leave a lasting impression on your heart and mind.

Join us on a journey of discovery as we explore the fascinating facts and hidden gems of Burkina Faso, and uncover the beauty and diversity of this extraordinary country in the heart of West Africa.
