The role of Tourism in the economy of Sierra Leone - Mrs Nabeela F Tunis, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs

"And first of all, we believe in the country, it's interesting, but when I was the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, I authored the current medium-term, national development plan, which expires next month. And one thing that we did do was to highlight tourism as one of those growth sectors. And we still believe that tourism has a lot to offer to us as a country in terms of us projecting in economic growth of Sierra Leone. And so certainly my vision is to ensure that tourism does take its place as one of the biggest income earners. As a country, we have the Big Five, we're focusing on five basic priorities, which is human capital development, and technology and innovation, public sector reformation. We're also focusing on youth employment and creating 500 jobs. I believe that the tourism sector can provide, you know, those 500 jobs, especially in creativity and culture. So what we're doing, everyone's been focusing on the beaches, on our assets, on our products. What I want to do is also focus on the people in terms of having creativity and our culture out there. Because what you see, it's much more competitive these days. There's so many people who are going in for conservation, going in for our nature-based solutions. But what can Sierra Leone offer? Sierra Leone can offer a lot of adventure. Sierra Leone can offer a lot of integration with our communities. Sierra Leone can offer a lot of volunteer tourism as well. So these are the aspects that I'd like to look at. So aside from us having the products, aside from us having the assets of lovely beaches, beautiful landscape, lovely topography, beautiful environment, you know, we're also focusing on the people and what the people have to offer. Promoting cohesion is one thing that we've done exceptionally well. You know, regional integration, religious tolerance is one thing that we've done extremely well. So as a country and as a nature nation, we're looking at how could we, you know, pitch this in the bigger picture, bigger product of tourism in the global space. And ensuring that our creative industry, our cultural industry is one aspect that people come to Sierra Leone to also explore. So exploring freedom is exploring our people, is exploring our assets, and it's enjoying our products."

In Sierra Leone, diabetes is both life-threatening and often undiagnosed. For 15-year-old diabetic Hawa and her family, finding life-saving insulin and doctors who know how to treat the disease has been a huge challenge.

Fifteen-year-old Hawa is severely ill with diabetes. She also lives in Sierra Leone, where there are just a handful of doctors for every 100,000 people, according to the World Health Organization. Clinics offering treatment to diabetics are especially rare in the West-African country, as is the life-saving drug insulin. Some of the medicine arrives in the country in suitcases, as private donations from wealthy countries. Another problem in Sierra Leone is a lack of information about the important of diet to those suffering from diabetes. Hawa fears being a burden to her family, but help is at hand.

Lost Freetown - Sierra Leone, 2009 - The expansion of this City has lead to it being on the brink of environmental and social disaster, and there appears to be no relief.

Sierra Leone is booming. In capital Freetown the population is rising and new homes spring up daily. But, like the 1950s sewage pipes, the city is creaking under the weight. How long before Freetown cracks?

A land of wooded plains and white beaches, Sierra Leone was known as a pearl in the African crown. But the brutal civil war damaged the country's rural economy and displaced farming families. Now Freetown is expanding rapidly, but few see this as cause for celebration. 'Yeah we have come a long way', says OLU Gorden, a Journalist here. 'But there has been so much sacrifice for so little ground gained'. In the slums of Kroo Bay in Freetown, children pick their way across rivers of sewage on their way to school. 'You see children holding onto the filth for support as they climb through', says Lynette Pamer, a doctor who works in the area. 'There's malnutrition because of diarrhoea in the under 5s, malaria, worms. They are all affected'. The city's two dumps are badly located, admits John Kamara of the Ministry of Lands: 'They are within the city, in water bodies, close to the sea.'. Freetown is engulfed in a tide of pollution that is spreading to the surrounding countryside. 'It's becoming an environmental disaster', says one Sierra Leone commentator. 'In a few years we will see this disaster come to pass'.

This short documentary traces the history of Sierra Leone's connection to the transatlantic slave trade and the infrastructures constructed by the slave traders to facilitate it.

Sierra Leone, located on the western coast of Africa, has a rich and complex history connected to the transatlantic slave trade. The trade began in the 15th century when European explorers arrived on the shores of West Africa and began to establish trade relationships with local leaders. Over time, this trade in goods, including slaves, grew into a lucrative industry.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Sierra Leone became a key centre of the transatlantic slave trade. Local leaders, such as King Jimmy, worked with European traders to capture and sell slaves to be transported across the Atlantic Ocean. The British also established a number of structures in Sierra Leone to support their involvement in the slave trade, including King Jimmy, Government Wharf and Falcon Bridge with its bunkers and trenches built in the capital Freetown to ramp up the slave trade.
