This final digital story from the 2018 UW Libraries High School Internship recounts a trip to Eritrea.
Ethiopian Airlines launched its first flight in twenty years to the Eritrean capital, Asmara. This is the latest step taken by the neighbouring countries which recently declared an end to war.
Children who live in Ethiopia and Eritrea have never known peace. Their countries have been fighting and arguing for half a century, but now the two countries have promised to end the conflict and embrace peace.

After the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia ended in 2000, the TPLF and its western masters unleashed renewed hostility, or war by other means, against Eritrea. They designed the asymmetric warfare to weaken the resolve, determination, nationalism, and pride of Eritreans. They targeted everything Eritrean, including the legacy of bravery and courage.
Eritreans faced unprecedented, concerted, sophisticated campaigns that aimed to antagonize, vilify, discourage, demoralize, dehumanize, and belittle them into submission. Nothing was off the table. They tried to undermine Martyr’s day, Independence Day, Festivals, the history of the struggle, the proud traditions of the Eritrean way, and the unity of Eritreans.
Eritrea is a small, yet vibrant country located in the Horn of Africa. With a rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes, Eritrea is a must-visit destination for travelers looking for an authentic African experience. Here's a travel guide to help you plan your trip to Eritrea.
Getting There:

Eritrean cuisine is heavily influenced by Ethiopian and Arabic cuisine, with staple dishes including injera (a sourdough flatbread) and tsebhi (a stew made with meat and vegetables). Tea is a popular beverage, and you can also find locally brewed beer and wine. Make sure to try some of the local dishes and drinks for a true taste of Eritrea.

Travel, trade, and phone communication had been impossible, separating families and destroying businesses, but the border town of Zalambessa began to transform. Trade, construction, family lives blossomed.
Yet, official checkpoints soon closed again for trade and vehicles due to political uncertainty. Border movement continues informally, on foot only. Hope and optimism remains, but now there is also frustration for families and despair for businesses.
In this film we follow the lives of a young Ethiopian family with relatives living on both sides of the border. We join them to celebrate the baptism of their first born son, and learn about their work and hopes about the future.
They are joined by a family photographer who has lived in Zalambessa all his life, and we meet an Eritrean businessman who is building a hotel in the town in hope that it remains hub for both Ethiopians and Eritreans.

More than half the population of Mozambique's run down capita Maputo live in poverty, despite the country being one of the world's new energy hotspots. Huge reserves of natural gas have been discovered off the coast, part of an enormous block experts say is twice the size of Saudi Arabia's. Investors are already pouring in, a $1bn redevelopment of the waterfront is planned and there could be many more benefits if the government can keep up. But the government lacks infrastructure and skilled Mozambicans. At the moment the only existing gas plant is run by the South African company Sasol. Although the vast majority of the gas will be exported, some believe that Africa's resources should stay in Africa. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Maputo.
At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'
