Antiquated, iron trains have stood abandoned for 20 years during Eritrea's war with Ethiopia. Now an army of veteran rail workers and their new apprentices are coaxing them back to life.

The Eritrean people are determined to reconstruct their dilapidated railway without any outside help. In the hot, dusty hills, they rescue the old rails from bunkers used during the war. All 169,000 steel sleepers have to be dug up from the ground, straightened and hauled back to the original track. They aim to complete 120 km of track, snaking from the coast to the capital. Transport Minister, Giorgis Teklemikael, says Eritrea's self-reliance and 'can do' philosophy will prevail. A train operating between Massawa and its suburbs is the first sign of success.

Eritrea remains one of the least visited countries in the world for a reason. On top of the visa issues, in order to travel anywhere outside of the capital – Asmara, or attend national events you need each individual permit. These permits aren’t the easiest to obtain due to the country’s bureaucracy and they’re often rejected.
I spent a full week exploring different corners of Eritrea, one of the most mysterious countries in the world.

A trip to Djibouti, East Africa (long post)…

1. On the 8 November I was part of a delegation that embarked on a trip to Djibouti, east of Africa to represent SA at an African fashion event.

2. The first time I heard about Djibouti was when my friend Reshy Chawane asked me to be part of her SA team for this trip. Before then, I had no idea such a place even existed🥴🥴. I googled it, it didn't even sound interesting 😅😆😴!

3. My initial response to Righteous asking me to go with her was to turn her down🙈. The place sounded like it wasn't interesting at all😵‍💫, I didn't want to travel with complete strangers(there would be 7 of us)...I also wasn't really in the fashion space at the time as I'd taken a break. In my head all these were reason enough to turn her down. That is, until I had a chat with myself: "Akho, this is an all expense paid trip out of the country to somewhere you’ve never been before, is your fear of the unknown gonna really prevent you from going🧐?!! What’s your comfort zone gonna do for you here gyhel!?!"...so I snapped out of it and went back to her to tell her I'd love to go with!

4. I'm usually VERY fussy about who I go on trips with, this would be my very first time traveling with complete strangers😬😑(for an entire week nogal!). I'm also not too great with making new friends, so yheyi...this part had me anxious I'm not gonna lie😅😆! Man, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL GROUP OF HUMANS😍!! We gelled right from the get-go when we landed in Djibouti. There was great camaraderie amongst us, we developed inside jokes, we became like family...in fact I think the epicness of the trip was mostly because of WHO I was with❤️.

Short trip realized in Djibouti before coming back to Europe. Awesome experience with Assal lake! I got stuck with corruption for 3 days so unfortunately my experience was not amazing, but in this video I really want to highlight this Assal Lake, which is the lowest point of Africa with -153m, and a salt lake like the dead sea! You should try! :)

Well arrived in Djibouti... what a mess at the airport!!! The first day won't happen as expected...

This video is longer than usual and that is because we were both really excited to be able to take the normal route from the Afar region (starting from Awash) to Djibouti. If you saw the video last year because it was unsafe we had to take a different route that is double the time. What makes this even more exciting is because it has been nearly a decade that we have not been able to take this path. It was completely unsafe for so long. For that reason is why I really wanted to capture everything. It was a beautiful experience to have, but sad at the same time to see so many displaced people, towns that have been vacated and torn down. Mixed emotions. Also, I used alot of the music we were listening to in the car so you get the same vibes. Hope you enjoy! More to come.

Cette vidéo est plus longue que d'habitude et c'est parce que nous étions tous les deux très excités de pouvoir emprunter la route normale de la région Afar (en partant d'Awash) vers Djibouti. Si vous avez vu la vidéo l'année dernière parce qu'elle n'était pas sûre, nous avons dû emprunter un itinéraire différent qui prend le double de temps. Ce qui rend cela encore plus excitant, c'est que cela fait près d'une décennie que nous n'avons pas pu emprunter cette voie. C'était complètement dangereux pendant si longtemps. C'est pour cette raison que je voulais vraiment tout capturer. C'était une belle expérience à vivre, mais triste en même temps de voir tant de personnes déplacées, des villes qui ont été évacuées et démolies. Émotions mixtes. De plus, j'ai utilisé beaucoup de musique que nous écoutions dans la voiture, donc vous obtenez les mêmes vibrations. Espérons que vous apprécierez! Plus à venir.
