The Bay of Nouadhibou Ship Graveyard, also known as the "Ship Cemetery," is a vast area of abandoned ships located on the coast of the city of Nouadhibou in Mauritania, West Africa. The bay is home to hundreds of rusting vessels, ranging from fishing boats to cargo ships and even military vessels.

The ship graveyard is a result of the region's booming fishing industry and the lack of proper waste management and recycling infrastructure. Many ships were abandoned in the bay due to financial difficulties or mechanical failures, while others were intentionally beached and left to rot.

The ship graveyard has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in exploring the eerie and desolate landscape. However, the area is also known for its hazardous conditions, including sharp metal edges, toxic materials, and the risk of collapsing structures.

Efforts have been made to clean up the bay and remove some of the abandoned ships. However, the vastness of the area and the lack of resources and infrastructure make the process difficult and slow. In addition, the bay continues to attract new ships, perpetuating the cycle of abandonment and pollution.

(1 Mar 2022) LEAD IN:
The world's largest civilian hospital ship is complete and will soon set sail for Dakar in Africa according to the charity Mercy Ships which built it.
The ship which has been kitted out with the latest medical technology in the Netherlands, will join other ships in the charity's fleet to provide surgical care for sub Saharan Africa where 93 percent of the population have little or no access to healthcare.

STORY-LINE:
This is the Global Mercy, a 37,000 tonnes hospital ship with six operating theatres, eye and dental clinics and the capacity to care for two hundred inpatients.
The ship is in Rotterdam in the Netherlands where it has been custom built for the charity Mercy Ships.
When it leaves for sub Saharan Africa in a few weeks time it will be staffed completely by volunteers.
Mercy Ships says it's mission is focused on the region because 93 percent of the population have little or no access to healthcare and there are on average just two doctors for every 10,000 people.
The ship also helps to train doctors in their country of origin according to the charity.
Right now the charity is welcoming visitors on board the ship where it's docked in Rotterdam.
It wants to raise awareness in the public of the work it does.
As many as ten thousand people have booked tickets to visit the world's largest civilian hospital ship.
The Director of the new Global Mercy Nathan Claus says the ship has been equipped to help patients with a wide range of needs.
"This is a purpose built hospital. This is Mercy Ships first hospital that we designed from scratch with our partners and have built it to our specifications and it has capacity for about 200 in patients. We have six operating rooms, we have a full functioning lab and radiology department and pharmacy. Everything that is required to do the care that we do on board is contained on this vessel," says Claus.
He shows how the wards on the ship have been customized.
"These beds were especially designed, the bed below is for the caregiver of the patient and the patient would go on top up there and these wards are fully equipped with the latest medical technology to provide the highest standard of care for our patients," he says.
Hundreds of volunteers worked six months to transform the cruiser into this hospital with modern medical equipment and IT systems.
Mercy Ships has spent more than 200 million USD on the build of the Global Mercy.
Sixty companies from the port of Antwerp helped the charity to carry out the refurbishment.
The Global Mercy will join the Africa Mercy, a hospital ship currently providing medical care in Africa.
Mercy Ships hopes the new ship will allow its volunteers to double their work not just with life-changing operations, but the  the education and training of local health care providers in Africa's poorest nations.
The Global Mercy can accommodate as many as 950 people during its missions, including 641 crew members, including surgeons and nurses, support staff.
Claus explains: "We target areas of the world where is not free, affordable, timely and safe surgery. So, we particularly go to these areas where this is very difficult and our patients sometimes have waited years or decades to get the surgical care they need. This is why is transformational because you can imagine places in Europe or North America people get a care very quickly in matter of weeks sometimes when they notice a problem, but our patients are waiting years which causes sometimes social and economic consequences."
According to CEO Gert van de Weerdhof the volunteers come from all over the world.

10. Lake kivu (DRC, Rwanda) – Area – 2700km2
Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. Lake Kivu is a fresh water lake and, along with Cameroonian Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun, is one of three that are known to undergo limnic eruptions. Around the lake, geologists found evidence of massive local extinctions about every thousand years, presumably caused by outgassing events. Lake Kivu is approximately 90 km long and 50 km at its widest. Its irregular shape makes measuring its precise surface area difficult; it has been estimated to cover a total surface area of some 2,700 km2 , making it Africa's eighth largest lake. The surface of the lake sits at a height of 1,460 metres above sea level. This lake has a chance of suffering a limnic eruption every 1000 years. The lake has a maximum depth of 475 m and a mean depth of 220 m, making it the world's eighteenth deepest lake by maximum depth, and the ninth deepest by mean depth.
9. Lake Mweru(Zambia, DRC) – Area – 5.120 km2
Lake Mweru is a freshwater lake on the longest arm of Africa's second-longest river, the Congo. Located on the border between Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo, it makes up 110 km of the total length of the Congo, lying between its Luapula River (upstream) and Luvua River (downstream) segments. Mweru is mainly fed by the Luapula River, which comes in through swamps from the south, and the Kalungwishi River from the east. At its north end the lake is drained by the Luvua River, which flows in a northwesterly direction to join the Lualaba River and thence to the Congo. It is the second-largest lake in the Congo's drainage basin and is located 150 km west of the southern end of the largest, Lake Tanganyika.
8. Lake Nasser (Egypt and Sudan) – Area – 5.250km2
Lake Nasser is a vast reservoir in southern Egypt and northern Sudan. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. Before construction, Sudan was against the building of Lake Nasser because it would encroach on land in the North, where the Nubian people lived. They would have to be resettled. In the end Sudan's land near the area of Lake Nasser was mostly flooded by the lake. The lake was created as a result of the construction of the Aswan High Dam across the waters of the Nile between 1958 and 1970. The lake is named after Gamal Abdel Nasser, one of the leaders of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, and the second President of Egypt, who initiated the High Dam project. The lake is some 479 km long and 16 km across at its widest point, which is near the Tropic of Cancer. It covers a total surface area of 5,250 km2 and has a storage capacity of some 132 km3 of water.
7. Lake Albert(Congo) – Area – 5.300km2
Lake Albert, also Mwitanzige and formerly Lake Mobutu Sese Seko, is a lake located in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is Africa's seventh largest lake, as well as the second biggest of Uganda's Great Lakes. Lake Albert is located in the center of the African continent, on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is about 160 km long and 30 km wide, with a maximum depth of 51 m, and a surface elevation of 619 m above sea level.
Lake Albert is part of the complicated system of the upper Nile. Its main sources are the White Nile, ultimately coming from Lake Victoria to the southeast, and the Semliki River, which issues from Lake Edward to the southwest. The water of the Victoria Nile is much less saline than that of Lake Albert. Unlike the very deep Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Kivu, Lake Albert's water temperature is relatively stable throughout, typically around 27–29 °C , and even its deeper
