The Sani Pass is steep and zig-zagging gravel road which climbs 2874m through the mountains. It’s the historic link between South Africa and Lesotho passing through the Drakensberg escarpment. Meet the people who live atop, and along, the ‘mother of all mountain passes’ and find out why it’s become a hub for nature and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Each week, Inside Africa in association with Zenith Bank highlights the true diversity of the continent as seen through the prism of different cultures and religions and the mediums of art, music, travel and literature.

Why Does Lesotho Exist? Lesotho, also known as the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a small country without sea, located in southern Africa with total area of approximately 30,355 square kilometers With an estimated population of over 2 million people, Lesotho is one of the smallest countries on the African continent and boasts a rich cultural heritage, unique geography, and a fascinating history.

It is surrounded by South Africa and is entirely landlocked. The country's geography is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with the Maloti and Drakensberg mountain ranges dominating the landscape. The highest peak in Lesotho is Thabana Ntlenyana, which stands at 3,482 meters above sea level. Its mountainous terrain and unique location have contributed to the country's isolation and its ability to maintain its independence.

The third installment of the Maletsuanyane attracted thousands of revellers to the Mountain Kingdom, officially kick-starting the season's festivities. The 3 days meat braai festival is still predominantly attracting more foreign tourists than locals from mainly South Africa, Botswana and eSwatini. From hiking, horse riding, camping and 4x4 off-roaders challenges, the event keeps growing bigger.

Why Does Lesotho Exist? (A Country In A Country )

Boina123

This week takes us on an epic adventure into Lesotho. The Kingdom in the Sky. Having picked up our new truck last week, our overland Africa adventure truly begins. We drive through the Drakensburg mountains to the Sani pass, an infamous road that only the strongest 4x4 will be able to negotiate. A short debate between Tara and John ends up with Tara being chosen to do the driving.

It's a crazy and scary drive along a steep winding road. We make it to the top at last, and enjoy a well deserved pint at Africas highest pub.

A drive across Lesotho has Crusoe very excited as we head off to explore Dinosaur footprints.

We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.

Thank you for being here. We hope that we can inspire you to Be Brave, Think Big and to Explore.

Lesotho is a small kingdom landlocked in the gigantic territory of South Africa. Among the poorest in the world, this high country has breathtaking landscapes, but above all it has a rare and precious asset in Africa: water. During the long winter months, the country is covered with snow and in the middle of the peeled mountains, there is even a ski slope very popular with South Africans. On the dirt tracks and deserted roads that cross the mountains, Alice and Fébellina struggle to find new customers for their old taxi. New encounters, mechanical troubles, but also fear and bursts of laughter punctuate the wanderings of the two friends. Justice has no place in the heart of these lost mountains. Cattle rustlers and other criminals sow terror in isolated villages. The police do not venture there: there is no road. The only alternative to crime: the mounted militia. Fierce horsemen who tirelessly chase outlaws from valley to valley. They are nicknamed The Wrath of the Lion. In the no man's land that separates South Africa from Lesotho, vehicles have to face a winding road strewn with pitfalls and cross the Sani Pass, a pass with a sinister reputation, under the gusts of wind. There are very few gas stations in the interior of the country, gasoline is scarce. Reckless drivers face the precipices to supply the lost villages.

This is the Sahara desert blanketed by a rare snowfall. The desert, more commonly known for its hot and dry climate, is currently witnessing this very rare occurrence.

On January 18th, temperatures had plummeted to -2 deg C near the town of Ain Sefra in northwest Algeria. The area is surrounded by the Atlas Mountains and is 1,000m above sea level. But the phenomenon is still rare as it has seen snow just five times in the last 43 years. This is because there is not usually enough water in the air despite it being able to get very cold at night.

The desert is much hotter the majority of the time, with an average temperature during the day hitting 38 deg C. Ain Sefra, also known as the gateway to the desert, has a heat record of more than 50 deg C.
There are speculations that this rare snowfall is due to climate change. The occurrence reveals how these types of events are going to get extremely common in the future as the climate is continuously changing due to global warming.

Such situations, including snowfalls in Sahara, a long cold spell in North America, very warm weather in the European part of Russia and sustained rains which sparked flooding in Western European countries, have been occurring more frequently. The high recurrence of these extreme conditions does stem from global warming.

With increasing climate change, scientists expect that the winter is going to change more than the summer. So we have to pay more attention to our winter weather forecasts.

As for the Sahara, with more of such unexpected events, the desert is expected to become green again in about 15,000 years!

A migrant boy with plastic bottles tied to himself arrived at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after swimming across the Spain-Morocco border.

Footage showed soldiers talking to the visibly distressed boy from the shore before he ran onto El Tarajal beach and attempted to scale a wall of rocks.

Around two-thirds of the roughly 8,000 migrants who made it to the enclave - and who Spanish authorities said included unaccompanied children as young as seven - have been expelled, the interior ministry in Madrid said.
