Frederick Akpoghene is the founder of JéGO Technologies, Inc., a company that designs and manufactures autonomous vehicles including self-driving pods that can be used to transport goods and services. A Nigerian immigrant, Akpoghene started his career in tech at just 16-years-old.

JéGO pods have been approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and have garnered a number of partnerships including one with a Miami-based Urgent Care Clinic. Akpoghene is launching the pilot area in Miami with the Clinic, mapping out the Pods course and connecting app users with urgent care services.

In Nigeria, the engagement of teenagers in communication devices has caused worry to teachers, parents and the authorities. VOA's Jacqueline Ogoh gets the views of teenagers, teachers and parents the dangers of peer pressure.

Nigeria's population of 170 million is a growing market for smartphone manufacturers. But there's a lack of locally-made games with Africa-centered content and in stepped Nigerian entrepreneur Hugo Obi. VOA's Laurel Bowman brings us his story.

A small firm in the Nigerian commercial city of Lagos is making a huge difference in the establishment and funding of Start ups in the country. Regarded as Nigeria's first start-up incubator, Co-Creation Hub is helping young Nigerians realize their dreams of solving societal problems and make a good living while at it.

Are tech start-ups in Nigeria advancing the technological field in Nigeria? Emeka does not believe so, as evidenced by his talk. He advises through it that we let go of the hype and mirage of the start-up industry and focus on the important factors that will make these start-ups succeed, whether tech related or otherwise. Emeka Okoye has over 17 years of experience in web, semantic, enterprise, mobile software development and project management. This has seen his creations from Nigeria’s earliest startup, ngex.com in 1996, to the citizen-led OpenDataGA: an open data initiative for Nigeria’s common folk. He has also led the development of continent-wide projects like Ghana’s elections app, Nigeria’s first financial website with IBTC in 1996, Africa’s first mobile app for crowdfunding election data, and a host of others.

Recognition for his work have come rolling in his listing by IT News amongst Africa’s 20 Most Influential Technology People in 2013, and earlier in 2012’s Mobile banking and Mobile Money Influencers in Social Media by Obopay. A shelf-full of awards and accolades for excellence is a testament to his achievements.

Mr. Okoye is a strong advocate of the use of mobile, open data and semantic web to re-develop Africa social media, and is an avid tweeter. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

David Opateyibo started building static models of airplanes with paper as a kid-driven by passion and a quest to know why birds fly.
After extensive research, he moved on to creating drones including the one he developed for the Lagos State government as a student at the International College of Aeronautics.
