Tigray is a region in the very north of Ethiopia along the border with its former rival Eritrea. It's been in the news recently as since the 4th November 2020 the Ethiopian Army along with the Eritrean Army have been fighting a campaign against the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for control over the region. The TPLF were the de-facto power in the entire country until the election of Abiy Ahmed in 2018 greatly upset the balance of power in Ethiopia and drew the country to the brink of civil war.

The Ethiopian Calendar, also known as the Ge'ez or Ethiopic Calendar is a a calendar used in the African country and is currently 7 to 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar, which is currently being used by the rest of the world. The calendar has 13 months, with the last one known as Pagume which translates to 'Forgotten' in Greek. Ethiopia is currently in 2015 and celebrates new year on September 11th or 12th depending on whether it's a leap year or not. The Ethiopian calendar history traces to the Egypt lunar calendar which is different to the Gregorian one and has a discrepancy of 13 days as of 2023, but the difference will add you to 14 days by the year 2100.

Zeinab Badawi travels to the rarely visited country of Eritrea and neighbouring Ethiopia to chart the rise of the kingdom of Aksum.

Described as one of the four greatest civilisations of the ancient world Zeinab examines archaeological remains in both countries dating back many hundreds of years before our common era.

She explains how the kings of Aksum grew rich and powerful from their control of Red Sea trade and how they were one of the first civilisations in the world that officially embraced Christianity in the fourth century. Also find out why the Queen of Sheba and the secret of the Ark of the Covenant are so fundamental to Ethiopia’s history.

What is now Ethiopia emerged from obscurity in the 10th Century BCE, in the form of the Kingdom of D'mt. This was followed by Aksum around 100 CE, which went on to forge an empire stretching from Nubia to Arabia.

Following the collapse of Aksum, Ethiopia was split into many small states, chief among them the Zagwe Dynasty. This dynasty flourished until 1270, when it was overthrown by the Solomonic Dynasty, which went on to unite almost all of Ethiopia in the 14th Century under king Amda Seyon I. From the 15th century onwards it declined under constant pressure from various Somali sultanates to the east, before fracturing into several lordships in the 18th Century.

Finally in 1852, Tewodros II began to reunite the country. Ethiopia began expanding outwards thereafter, giving it the necessary strength to ward of the Italian Empire in 1896. The 20th Century was comparatively worse; following Italian occupation in 1936-41, the country faced famine, uprisings and revolution in the coming decades. Ethiopia has somewhat recovered since, having liberalised its economy and government in the 1990s.

The story of the baptism of the Ethiopian queen's servant in Acts 8:26–39 is often considered the beginning of Christianity in Ethiopia. Another church tradition, however, attributes the evangelization of Ethiopia to an apostle unknown to us today. According to the Ecclesiastical History of Rufinius, during the time of Constantine the Great, two young men - Frumenius and Adesius, preached in the Ethiopian capital of Axum. After the royal family accepted the faith, Frumenius met with Bishop Athanasius, who gave him the necessary assistants and the title of Bishop of the Ethiopian Church.

The Ethiopic Bible has a long and complicated history that dates back to ancient times. The origins of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and its scriptures can be traced back to the 4th century AD when Christianity was first introduced to the region. The Bible used by these early Christians in Ethiopia was written in the ancient Geez language, which was the language of the Ethiopian people at the time.

King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah and Elect of God, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. These were the titles bestowed on Ras Tafari Makonnen when he was crowned Emperor of the Ethiopian Empire on the 2nd of November 1930.

As leader of a civilisation that had lasted for over, the new Emperor would now be seen by millions around the world as a universal symbol of African pride and sovereignty, at a time where virtually all indegenous African kingdoms had fallen under European subjugation.

Over the course of his 44 year reign as leader of a civilisation that had lasted for over 3,000 years, Selassie would be many things to many people: to some an imperialist and brutal despot, to others a symbol of anti-imperialism and freedom, to some a pompous and self-serving monarch, but to others a literal messiah and God incarnate.

Paradoxes and contradictions may be common to all great historical figures, but not many mixed oil and water quite like the last Emperor of the Ethiopian Empire.
