On August 14, 2020, the How Kids Learn Foundation in partnership with the EduCare Foundation, welcomed Dr. Shawn Ginwright to lead a presentation on the Healing Impact of Racial Injustice and Inequity: The Role of Afterschool.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the long list of African Americans killed by police has laid bare the racial injustice and inequity in our society. We know that many adult staff and many of our youth participants in afterschool are people of color. In the wake of this turmoil, how can we address the needs of our staff? How can we prepare staff and redesign our programs to promote racial healing? What is the best way to facilitate discussions of systemic racism? How is afterschool positioned for this? Should we urge/ support youth to engage in civic action? And, is there a way to do some of this work remotely, as programs may not re-open in the Fall? Dr. Ginwright addresses some of these questions in his presentation and later answers participants' questions.

Making your first feature documentary is hard, and it's a process that you rarely get a close look at. This is why I decided to start documenting my own struggle as a filmmaker.

About three years ago I started working on my debut feature doc called The Pearl Of Africa. Making it seems to be impossible, which I why I decided to create a Vlog about my struggle to make the film.

Jonny von Wallström is a award winning self shooting director. His work has been featured in the world’s largest medias such as; CNN, Arte, The Huffington Post, MTV, TV6, ZTV, SVT, Al Jazeera and more. In 2014 & 2015, he was awarded Swedish Guldägget and PPFT Maggie Award for media excellence in global Journalism. He’s also a contributor at The Huffington Post.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice will be the next speaker in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute’s A Time for Choosing Speaker Series. From January 2005-2009, Dr. Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. Dr. Rice also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) from January 2001-2005, the first woman to hold the position. She is currently the Tad and Dianne Taube Director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Tickets are $65 per person and include a buffet dinner following the program.

From January 2005-2009, Condoleezza Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. Even though the term “Quiet Quitting” has existed for well over a decade…the RECENT trajectory is all thanks to a viral TikTok, which summarized that - even though you’re not outright QUITTING YOUR JOB - you’re quitting the idea of going “above and beyond.” You’re still performing your duties, but you’re no longer subscribing to the “hustle culture mentality” that work has to be your life - and that, your worth is not defined by your productive output.

However, the reality is: “acting your wage” will come at the cost that - long term, you’ll likely have a much harder time getting a promotion, working up to new opportunities, or even keeping your job - IF that’s something you value.

If you’re the type who WANTS recognition, who WANTS to grow within their career, and WANTS to eventually make more money…it’s often BETTER to give a LITTLE MORE than expected, and by doing so - you make a lasting impact that sets you apart from the competition.

In addition to that, it also serves as your safety net in the event we DO enter a severe recession with mass layoffs…because, like it or not…throughout recessions, we tend to see a COMPLETE contraction across the entire economy, including job losses.

I would take this EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY…because, even though it’s easy to “quietly quit” while unemployment is at an all time low, since 1955 "the U.S. economy has always experienced a recession within two years from every quarter in which inflation was above 4% and unemployment was below 5%, as they are today.”….and, on top of that…the unemployment rate has NEVER held below 3.5% for more than a year.

From my perspective, it’s totally okay to set boundaries in terms of your work/life balance…but, it shouldn’t be surprising if someone else gets the promotion, or a better opportunity - and that needs to be factored in, at least to SOME degree.

Of course, on the flip side: employers can’t simply expect their employees to keep 1-upping each other for a raise that doesn’t match inflation - plus, I’m sure it’s also demotivating to see the person who slacks off, getting paid the same as the person who takes on extra work, so, companies NEED to cultivate an environment where there CAN be incentives along the way.

Now, as far as what YOU could do about it: honestly, if you’re the type who’s happy with what they’re doing, self-motivated, and has a clear path for what you want, this is an opportunity to stand out in the workplace, and solidify yourself as someone who indispensable for the company. It could also be a great time to look for other work that’s more personally fulfilling, or - creates a better environment for what YOU want out of life.

Eboo Patel visits Mountain View to discuss his award-winning book "Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation."

Named by US News & World Report as one of America's Best Leaders of 2009, Eboo Patel is the founder and Executive Director of Interfaith Youth Core (www.ifyc.org), a Chicago-based institution building the global interfaith youth movement. Eboo is a regular contributor to the Washington Post, National Public Radio and CNN. He is a member of President Obama's Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University, where he studied on a Rhodes scholarship.

He has spoken at the TED Conference, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and universities around the world, and has written for the Chicago Tribune, the Review of Faith and International Affairs, and the Sunday Times of India. Eboo is a Young Global Leader in the World Economic Forum and an Ashoka Fellow, part of a select group of social entrepreneurs whose ideas are changing the world. He was named by Islamica Magazine as one of ten young Muslim visionaries shaping Islam in America; was chosen by Harvard's Kennedy School Review as one of five future policy leaders to watch; and along with IFYC was honored with the Roosevelt Institute's Freedom of Worship Medal in 2009.
