Chad , officially known as the Republic of Chad , is a landlocked country in north-central Africa.

It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon to the south-west, Nigeria to the southwest , and Niger to the west.

Chad has several regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile Sudanian Savanna zone in the south.

Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second-largest in Africa.

The capital N'Djamena is the largest city.

Chad's official languages are Arabic and French.

Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups.

Islam and Christianity are the main religions practiced in Chad

Beginning in the 7th millennium BC, human populations moved into the Chadian basin in great numbers.

By the end of the 1st millennium AD, a series of states and empires had risen and fallen in Chad's Sahelian strip, each focused on controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region.

France conquered the territory by 1920 and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa.

In 1960, Chad obtained independence under the leadership of François Tombalbaye.

The past few days in N'Djamena, Chad have been the worst days of my entire life and I've had a miserable time here. Never in my life have I been more scared, threatened, or attacked (both verbally and physically) than in this hot, dusty, beaten-down deserted city. I was in a disastrous police chase on a motorbike and I also was attacked by a dozen people for taking 1 photo inside a minibus. I apologize for the lack of posting lately - I've had no access to wifi until now and I'm still shaken up by what has happened to me.

If it wasn't for my 6'6'' local friend (AKA Bodyguard), then I'm not sure I'd be alive right now. This is not a joke, this is serious.

The lesson learned has been learned on my end to always ask before taking a photo of anyone, but it was uncalled for these people to attack me as they did. I will end this post by saying that I do not hate Chad (as a whole) and I realize that unlucky situations can make or break your experience in any country. But it's safe to say that I will not be coming back to Chad anytime soon.

What's the worst thing that's happened to you on the road? Please share your stories below

On 20 April 2021, news emerged that Idriss Deby, the long-time leader of the country of Chad, had died after he had gone to the front-line to visit his troops that were battling rebels belonging to a group calling itself Fact (the Front for Change and Concord in Chad).

In his 30 years as Chad's president, Idriss Deby emerged as one of Africa's wiliest political survivors, holding on to power through rebellions that reached as far as his palace gates and establishing himself as a key military ally of Western powers.

As a military commander and as president he was feared and people say he had an aura about him that meant they did not want to mess with him. And he never hesitated to crack down whenever there was some kind of threat.

Now that the dust has settled, in this episode of African Biographics, we look at the story of Idriss Deby and how he managed to hold on to power for such a long time.

On August 11, 1960, Chad gained independence from France. In half a century of independence Chad has known decades of on-off war, poverty crisis, and trouble with its neighbours like Sudan. Then oil was discovered and this year the country signed a treaty with Sudan putting an end to the fighting. So are things finally coming together for Chad, or will its newly found resource become a curse as it has in many African nations?

The Zaghawa tribe of eastern Chad is a minority group in the country wielding influence well beyond its numbers.

The tribe has traditionally roamed the lands across Chad's unstable east and Sudan's northern Darfur - swaying the politics of both countries.

From North Cameroon to Chad, from the land of the ancient elephants to the dunes of Kanem, this film is a non-stop journey in the form of a logbook, through a little known, almost forbidden land that is a wealth of astonishing countryside and unusual people. The Kapsiki villages hanging off the side of volcanic peaks, our itinerary of contrast and adventure continues towards the wildlife reserves of Waza then on to N’Djaména and the Chari River. Finally we arrive at the banks of Lake Chad with its fishermen and its polders in the middle of the desert. And to finish, the oasis which borders the small town of Mao, in the province of Kanem.

The Masa people, also called Masana, Banana, or Yagoua are a Chadic ethnic group that is found in Cameroon and Chad. They originated from Yemen, then migrated to Egypt before moving to Sudan. This was during the years when they avoided being converted to Islam. The Masa people, over time, have been famous for fishing and rearing cattle. In the early 800's, the Masa people left Sudan to lake Chad. They lived near the Chad border, and were targets of slave traders from Tripoli during the Middle Eastern slave trade. In order to escape from the slave traders, many of the Masa people crossed the Chad river to the geographical space now known as Cameroon. This marked the origin of the Masa tribe in Cameroon. As if the struggles during the Middle Eastern slave trade weren't enough, the Masa people were victims of the transatlantic slave trade, as they were vulnerable to the slave traders who came from Nigeria. They, however, remain celebrated for never participating in the slave trade, as they never sold their fellow Masa into any form of slavery. They also tried hard to resist capture. With an estimated population of 266,000 to 469,000, the majority of the Masa people reside in Cameroon, with most of them speaking Masana, the language of the Masa people. While 45% of the population are Muslims, another 45% are Christians, among which 30% are Catholics or Protestants, while 15%  are Evangelical Christians. In recent years, the Masa people have been more active in livestock farming. There have been several battles between the Cameroonian and Chadian livestock farmers, leaving many wounded.
These battles were usually because some of the farmers were accused of stealing cows. These battles were also owing to the fact that the Masa people are passionate about their livestock. This reflects its importance in social relations and exchanges. For instance, livestock is used as bride price in Masa communities.

Today in Chad nomadism is still a way of life for many pastoralist ethnic groups such as Arabs, Tubus, Wodaabe or Fulattas groups.
Irregular seasonal rains and recurrent droughts make mobility the only viable route for these Sahelians.
Men or even entire families, along with hundreds and hundreds of animals, carry out transhumance every year. In the dry season they move from the north of the country to the south and return in the rainy season to the more arid regions of northern Chad.
